The kid just hit the garage door and a new one will have to be put in. Mine is a 16’x7’ steel insulated door. Is there anything I need to know about choosing a new one or does steel and insulated pretty much cover options? It faces south and is beige if it matters.

I’ll call it a “rail” that stiffens the door. Think they are always mounted to top edge of top panel and bottom edge of bottom panel. Typically a “U” shape from folded steel. Screwed to the panel it prevents sagging when the door is up. With such a wide door you are likely to get this sag over time. Just be sure there are several on the other panels. One on each would be a good start. I tend to over build. Still, I installed two for a friend and it saved them from a folded panel and the need for a new door. 16’ is a long span.

Good call on the rail. I had to add one to the top of the door. Especially if you are using an opener

Mine’s rated for 160mph like this one: I don’t know if it would survive the kid though.

I've seen to segments on the news within the last six days about Thieves using an antenna an code readers to access remote controlled doors. So I guess now we have to go back to un plugging the motor and locking the mechanism when the door is closed. Of course neither segment offered any info re: deterant devices Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency. Neck Ties, Hats and ammo brass, Never ,ever touch'em w/o asking first

Wow. That looks pretty serious. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." I went with a CHI 2216. It’s a south facing door so I bought the R17 polyurethane door instead of the R9 polystyrene. The walls are already insulated so the next step is 1/2” plywood sheathing and an A/C unit in the wall. I’m getting too old to sweat my butt off every time I need to change oil, brakes, or load up some ammo.

Had to replace my springs yesterday. Make sure they are in good condition as bad springs, like mine, were not doing the springgy thing which helps your opener lift the door. Went from having to heave the door open by hand to using fingers with the new springs. We had one of those. Plastic gear (where it should have been metal) failed. No more Wayne Dalton for us! הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

Just replaced my old uninsulated wood door with Clopay insulated steel. Mine faces north so I passed on adding a row of windows that would never get sun. I have other windows in the garage. ___________________________ "Opinions vary" -Dalton

I had read about the Chamberlain side mount opener; then I was out walking in the neighborhood, heard a neighbor opening his garage door: it was almost silent. I looked, and there was no central drive mechanism. Sure enough, he had that Chamberlain sidemount opener. It opens up the area above the garage door for more STORAGE which is what we really want _________________________ “Remember, remember the fifth of November!"

I have a side opener on a Martin door. Very quiet. Works beautifully.

When I leave the house for more than a short while, I pull the device that de-activates the motor and lock the door manually. Also, the walk thru door to my house has been replaced with an exterior steel door, with security hardware. They might get my garden hose, but I'll have warning if they come inside.

Direct drive side-mount is the only way to go. I have LiftMasters and wouldn't go any other way. Looks like they've gone up about 25% since I bought mine, but they're worth every penny. ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Faces west. Hurricane Charley took the original door out. The new one survived Ian unscathed.

We have a Liftmaster 8500W, has MyQ and a battery backup. Been very happy with it. That battery backup sure came in handy when we had no power for 3 days a few years ago in the Texas freeze.
