I can find no information on a "GRIM photo editor."

Do you possibly mean "GIMP?"

It works. I've never used Photoshop, but it's allegedly like a poor man's Photoshop. TBH: Other than very simple things, like cropping, resizing, sharpening, etc., I've never had much luck with it as a photo editor. E.g.: Colour correction. Never have gotten the hang of it. Don't know how good its red eye reduction is these days. If didn't used to be much good.

Give it a try. It's free, so what have you got to lose?

GIMP can do a LOT, but you have to learn how to use it first.
I don't find it intuitive and got a book to explain it.

I tried it and it was beyond me.
That doesn't mean it's beyond you.
Try it out. You have nothing to lose.

Agree wholeheartedly with this.
I tried GIMP and Paint.NET and found Paint.NET easier to use, and the forum they use was easier to find info on.

I've used GIMP for decades. It does what I want. I've never used it outside of the Linux world though.

Comes stock in Linux Mint, so I've used it a lot. No way do I come anywhere near using Gimp's full capability or do any photoshopping with it, nor have ever used photoshop. I use Gimp for resize, crop, adjust sharpness, brightness, contrast, color and spot areas of "healing" as needed. Anything beyond that on occasion and I've easily found instructions via google search but found instructions to be heavy on a manual interface and not so much point and click for special photo manipulation situations ... although it's capable.

GIMP can be very overwhelming to new users. If you're looking for a simple image editing program, and you have a Windows machine, I would take a look at Paint.Net.

Actually, just trying to learn something new. I do have some old pictures that I'd like to play around with just to see if I could clear them up any.

Like WaterburyBob and others I found trying to learn GIMP's user interface too daunting. Ended up with FastStone Image Viewer (current version 6.7) freeware for light duty and Corel's Paintshop Pro (now Ultimate 2019 version) for serious tweaking and processing. If I'm working with RAW files, Silkypix Developer Studio SE (now version 4.4) that came with my Panasonic digital cameras works well.

The Corel package can use many Photoshop plugins but no scripts, and is seen by many to be a very capable cost effective alternative to Photoshop and its subscription based fees.

From what you've said about just wanting to play around a bit with some old photos, the free FastStone Image Viewer is something I'd highly recommend you try! http://faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm
