I am not too sure, but I know it took around six months. I don’t think it was as stringent as trying to be an FBI agent as for that they interview your spouse and a lot of other people in your life along with giving you a polygraph. I never asked him who all they interviewed or what they did, but it did take 6 months to complete. We had at least two BBQs while he was waiting on the background check and he didn’t complain about the process.

True, but I wonder what the walk back to the car is like after court is over? There is a judge in the Central Valley (non-Federal I think) who is known for carrying a 1911 in the caliber JMB intended. He is known for this as when accosted by a “judicially involved person” armed with a pistol behind the courthouse he produced said 1911 and resolved the situation quickly, firmly, and finally.

I totally get that the bailiffs and other LEOs would prefer that they (and others with the same training) be the only ones armed. Heck, any rational person might prefer to have a pretty good idea about how any other armed person is going to think about and respond to any particular situation. Still, if it is his courtroom...

His parking space is in a secured parking garage not even other court employees have access to. Only judges, US Marshalls, or the armed security have access there and there is armed security in the parking garage.
