recently, I had a high school senior ask me if his backpack would give him any ballistic protection if there was an active shooter in his school. I have been doing some ballistic testing and the results are very positive. This is very dear to me because I have school aged kids, my wife is a teacher, and I was an SRO for a period of time in between assignments, before being injured in the line of duty. Please pass the link along so we can get the word out to as many school age kids as possible that they are carrying ballistic protection with them everyday. Here is the link, thanks.

DSgrouseinteresting, Hanover county schools do not allow backpacks in the classroom. Kids are to swap out books via their locker between classes.

Balzé HalzéIsn't there a company that actually manufacturers school backpacks designed to house ballistic plates?
I remember thinking that I would definitely buy my child one.

HRKIf the school doesn't let you take a backpak from room to room, get a large book and put a tactical balistics plate into the book maybe nobody is going to want to take your "Advanced Physics" work book.

sigfreundIt would be interesting to know exactly which 223/5.56 load was used. I was surprised that it penetrated only 5 or so inches. If someone regularly carries that many books, it’s good to know. That level of protection against rifle fire would require a pretty heavy hard plate, and I can’t help but wonder how many students would be willing to lug that around in addition to their books.
Another issue is that if students all get indoctrinated to hold their backpacks full of books out in front of them during a shooting, the most common shooters are students themselves and would know to not try to shoot through the packs.

In Orange County there isn’t enough time between classes to go to the locker so most kids carry theirs with them throughout the day.

It was 55 gr. Military ball. The rounds were shot from 7 yards and stuck the books within 1/2” of each other. Obviously, we need to convince the powers to be to harden all potential targets, but this is a first step parents can take with their children.

Books / etc obviously help the equation.
