The United States Postal Service's package tracking system has been down ever since sometime mid-morning, EDT, Monday morning. Earlier today I posted a brief rant about it in Grrr... USPS Tracking System Down, but now it's gone from annoyance to "Well, isn't this interesting?" Near as I can tell, from digging around, many packages might be stuck wherever they were when tracking went tango uniform and nobody's been able to ship anything new via USPS' shipping API. Their tracking web site is back up, again, after being up briefly, earlier, then back down, but there's been no updates. E.g.: I have three packages in the pipe. They're all still shown as being right where they were this morning. I still cannot login to my personal USPS account. It's unclear whether packages are actually stuck where they were or they are moving. Or some are stuck and others are moving. Some people report receiving their packages. Some not. Some have reported getting some of their expected deliveries, but not others. Very weird. What's even weirder? No announcement, posting, what-have-you from USPS at all as to what's going on or when expect service restored, packages delivered, the ability to send new packages, etc. And nothing in the media at all. This is a pretty significant issue, and nothing in the "news," not even the IT news, at all? Weird. Very weird. "America is at that awkward stage. A bunch of emails and text messages came in while I slumbered ... I finally turned my ringer off on the phone as they burped in at their own pace. Some time before midnight?

My USPS account and tracking are working fine now. And the USPS has posted the following message on their website:

Just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is the smart thing to do. |
I have never had much use for their tracking system. I have had times the package was in my hands but they showed it still several states away. I have also had stuff showing as delivered but it doesn't show up for several days. I don't even bother to look at it these days. Integrity is doing the right thing, even when nobody is looking.

It's still not 100%. I'm still getting "This service is currently unavailable" when logging into my USPS account. One of my two packages sent via "smart post" (or whatever it's called) that was handed off to USPS on Friday hasn't budged, the other one is at my route's carrier annex. An Amazon package that wasn't shipped until Sunday is at the carrier annex, while one that shipped yesterday is still stuck in California.
Oddly enough, it's always worked fairly well for me. In fact: If I hadn't been watching a package a couple weeks ago, and gone to pick it up at the carrier annex, myself, the day after a failed delivery, who knows what might have happened to it. It had been placed in the "outgoing" bin. As in "outgoing to the sorting center." Theoretically, it should have bounced right back to the carrier annex, but... "America is at that awkward stage. it's called Delivery Confirmation for a reason, you can usually confirm a delivery,, within a day or 2 of the scheduled delivery date, the tracking part has never been truly accurate, https://chandlersfirearms.com/chesterfield-armament/

Tracking is back up but with less specificity. Status of "on its way to ...." instead of actual arrivals and departures. This development S U C K S !!!! Certifiable member of the gun toting, septuagenarian, bucket list workin', crazed retiree, bald is beautiful club! USN (RET), COTEP #192
