From 2011. The family below us are tree people. Dad's too old now but his adult son and daughter run separate tree businesses. The son is an ex-paratrooper...figures. The second pic demonstrates how to communicate with a guy running a chain saw.

I remember you had a thread awhile back asking about purchasing a chainsaw. Was this the task you were contemplating for yourself? If so, you made the right choice.

a job well done indeed,
look at it as actually saving $5,000.00

because no property was damaged or anyone injured.

And yes I have thought about your wood situation ,on more than one occasion, and I have hoped you would get around to doing this.

( I know a few things, because Ive seen a few things)

No, I was not trying to take down a 60 foot tree with a chainsaw.

My previous query about a chainsaw was for clearing limbs already on the ground.

I live in a two story house and the tree guy said if that tree fell on my house, it would slice through like a hot knife through butter and go all the way to ground.
We're not taking about pain-in-the-ass roof damage. We're talking about a life-threatening situation and a condemned house.

And no, I won't be home when they do this. They are putting a crane in my driveway and removing this massively heavy tree by bringing it out in large sections over the top of my house. My wife, my cat and me- we'll all be elsewhere when this is happening.

There is a certain comfort in having professionals tend to 'danger trees'.

A few years ago, we had a pro take the top 50' off a 100' tall Port Orford cedar. About a half century ago, some previous resident had done a simple butt-cut thru the main trunk up about 50' off the ground, which conveniently was on a hillside above the house.

In the interim decades from the last trim, an entire forest of 7 yes SEVEN(!) upgrowning trunks developed, each at least 18" at the cut our own trimmer made. It was a very tall, very wide, very whippy danger tree, with shallow roots on a dirt hillside.

I had a botantist tree lady, a certified disaster-response trainer who managed one of the local county emergency radio network cell phone maintenance tree advisory groups, and 2 certified arborists give me their advise.

On a cold bright New Years Day the crew showed up & cut it down by 50%. The massive sail-effect of the wind no longer gives me the quivers. And the 'cedar' (actually a cypress so I learned) heated our house for a couple winters.

We had six (6) humongous old oak trees taken down this spring. two the previous year. Money well spent.

We had a big ol' oak about 12-15' off the NW corner of the house. One year it developed a frost crack. We had it bolted and cabled. Some ten years later or so it started to appear to be rising out of the ground and leaning toward the house. Particularly since the winds often come out of the NW in a storm, it had to go. Once it was taken down it was clear it had indeed been rotting from the inside, likely as a result of that crack.

I miss that tree Frown

Last summer a tulip tree met the same fate. This one was about 40' off the NW corner of the house. Wife didn't realize, when she planted it, that they grow quickly and to a height of up to 190'! And they're brittle. So, beautiful as it was it had to go, too.

We've had (counting...) six "major" trees removed over the years. Three because they'd become a threat to the home. One because it was hopelessly damaged by a storm. Two because the power company had destroyed them. (The hacks!) Probably as many smaller trees--some of which I've taken down myself.

Last year we even paid to have a big old black cherry removed in our next-door neighbour's woods because it was about to come down on its own and was threatening trees in our woods.

Para...best thing you can do if one of those trees are attacking your property...last November I had an ash taken out (best Grand I've ever spent...no more stopped up gutters, roots at the foundation [mine or the neighbors] and less work on this old guy!)...if it becomes a problem, take it out!...life's to short to worry about such things Wink ...bucket trucks are your friend!...

#1 on the Thorlo socks Smile...

Edit...my brother in Smyrna just spent over $4,000 to remove one dying oak leaning towards his house...3 hours work total for a crew of 4, including loading and hauling it away (for firewood I would assume).

I had to have quite a few trees removed from the freakin’ wooded property we had in the ATL area. Huge pines and assorted dead hardwoods. Good golly, we gave a lot of money to those tree guys. I feel your pain, para.

while in grade school the dutch elm disease hit E. Iowa Hard !
They took 24 of them off of our block.

all were 70 ft. tall or taller ,for three weeks solid that summer, we woke up to chain saws or stump grinders .

I was very young and never stopped to appreciate those wonderful trees.

Until there were no owls, cicadas or song birds.

we did not have air conditioning so the windows were open all the time. a little bit of my child hood got cut out that summer
