American translation for M6 Half Moon Nut? Login/Join

Long story short I need a bunch (16) of these: half moon nut, but I can't find them in America. I'm assuming there's an American English name for them that I also can't find. Anyone know what they are and where I can get them?

Long story long: my wife and daughter decided "we" need to rearange the furniture in the kids' bedroom of our 2 bedroom, 1 bath summer cottage. This involved taking the dressers and mattresses out of the kids' bedroom, partially disassembling the bunk bed, and leap frogging the frames around the room to get them into the "better" locations. Unfortunately, the zinc alloy cheap as shit half moon nuts the bunk bed was assembled with are falling apart upon reassembly. We are 20 miles from a hardware store, 70 miles from a Home Depot, and the kitchen has 3 mattresses, 3 box springs, 2 dressers, and assorted other stuff that has no place to go until I get the bunk bed back together.

For the record, I've been married long enough to know when the wife says "we" need to..., IT'S A TRAP! But, she played the daughter card on me.

Could you tap a t nut in its place or is it cosmetic?

Edited to add, that was just quick amazon, there were a bunch of other sources in a quick search.

^Yes, but those fit a 40mm hole and the holes in the bunk bed rails are 30mm.

I don't think t-nuts would have enough bearing on the side of the hole.

If I don't find the right ones, I'm thinking I could make the. I could get a piece of 30mm diameter aluminium rod, drill some holes, tap them, and cut off disks. Or, I could cut 5/16" strips of a 1" wide, 3/16" thick piece of steel, bend them to shape, drill a hole through the middle and use a regular nut.

Yes, I saw the ones on Amazon, $80 for what I need with delivery some time in mid-July because they come from the UK place I linked in my original post. There's no way my wife will wait that long to use the kitchen. If they were easy to find, I wouldn't be asking. I've spent 2 hours looking including McMaster. There has to be an American name for them.

NO, the ones HRCJON posted are for a 30 mm hole. Look at the specs. They look to be exactly what you have.

While I was typing a response to Sigfreund about the 40mm ones he posted, hrcjon snuck a post in. I then modified my post to reflect that I had seen the ones he posted, but they would be $80 and not delivered until mid-July. Roll Eyes In fact, I even mentioned the t-nuts Krazeehorse suggested, so I responded to all three of the posted from people trying to help in that post. Now, I've responded to you as well.

Can you use U.S. ones with the closest size smaller U.S. bolts?

A photo of the fastener in use on the bed may help someone to recommend a temporary substitute fastener.

It’s a bunk bed, not a firearm. And considering how far you are from, well, everything, who is going to ever see it?

^I saw the zip bolts as well. The only part I need would is the metal plate which I have been unable to find separately except for the place in the UK.

Sure, that's exactly what I'd like to do. Now, what are they called in American English so I can find them?

Pics as requested:

I don't know if this helps, and I can't say I've verified this, but if Elgin Fasteners' site is correct, M6 is roughly equivalent to US 1/4-20 and 1/4-28.

If that proves out (maybe get a nut of each of those from a local source to test?) that might let you widen your search.

I also found a product description on WalMart.com that gives some alternative names for the nuts:

quote:
The nuts, known as half-moon, lunar or crescent and virtually non-existent on the US market, are indispensable for the rail to post connections.

I'd just bend a piece of steel. Slap a nut behind it. Tighten it on down. Quick & Easy.

Or, for "piece of steel" I might substitute "fender washer"

I had a quick look on the Ikea website and found 2 parts that may be useable:
https://www.furnitureparts.com...air-ikea-part-115983

and https://www.furnitureparts.com.../ikea-u-wedge-102335

you will need a nut but it would work.

when we moved here from the UK we had a shipping container of furniture. It is almost all gone now, as most of our stuff looked too small in our house here!

Yep, that's direction I'm heading. The hole is a little over a 1/2 deep, so I'll get a piece of 1/2" wide steel at the hardware store. Now, what kind of drill bit, carbide? I'm joking of course.

Thank you. It's the best I could do on short notice and now much more solid than the cast zinc half moon nuts were. Turned out the bolts were not M6, but rather 1/4-20. I assumed given the cheapness of the furniture that they'd have been metric. Fortunately, I brought one to the hardware store and saved myself a second 40 mile round trip to get the right nuts.
