I was prescribed Allopurionol after a terrible bout of gout. Gout was one of the most painful things I have experienced. If you told me there was a million dollars at the end of a 100 yard dash, and I had 20 seconds to get there, I could not have succeeded. At night, it hurt when the sheets brushed against my ankles/feet.

Anyway, 2.5 years later, my doc is very pleased with my blood work and I am happy to report no more gout.

Thanks all, that's the peace of mind I needed!

bendable - mrvmax and mrapteam666 hit the nail on the head why I was asking here. Also glad to hear that you've been using it without ill effect.

I'm 46 and have been on 100mg of allopurinol per day for almost 20 years now for gout control. Never had a stone. No side effects.

I still have a full head of black hair but that's probably the asian genes.

Not minority enough!

had my first stone at 19,
I was at work, had a terrible burning back ache, and laid back on a hard table about an hour and it finally passed,

at the time, I had no idea what it was,

fast forward 20 yrs and had my second,

I was at work, felt like someone punched me or like I had pulled something in my back,

got progressively worse,
pharmacist gave me a pill that did no good,

starting throwing up,

wife came and picked me up , and on the drive to the Dr Office, I had to get out the car and walk around a bit at stop lights,

(freaked her out, and a few other drivers, but it helped)

3 shots of something in the Doc's office, that did not work,

pushed me over to the hospital, (With me asking the nurse to stop so I could puke a few times) and a shot of Toridol (?) while waiting on a CT type scan (Xrays at the doc office showed nothing)

passed it then, from the kidney, and fell asleep quickly,

passed that stone out later that night at home,
freaked the wife out cause I was still loopy from all the drugs, and pissing thru a screen,

piss looked like a dark red wine,,

10 stones later, and I basically pass one every 2 yrs, last one was last week, and the biggest yet,

felt some tightness in my back a month or so ago, figured it was a small stone moving around, and it went away,

got up at 1am to pee, and felt a tickle,
and there it was,

nice rounded stone, .250x.175x.125,

doc says I am a producer,
drink OJ, Grapefruit Juice, or Lemon Juice to help smooth them out,

my last CT/MRI thing with contrast showed many many stones in my kidneys, all very small, and looked liked kidneys were hit with bird shot,

been to the ER a couple times, each time they give me a script for perc's or similar telling me I will need them etc etc,

never got them filled,

shook one loose in May one year, and it was a sharp one, hurt often,
found that if I stomp my feet, it shakes it up, apparently, and stops hurting,

that one if I was working hard had me pissing merlot, if I had a light day, just regular clear pee,,

Uro told me to also drink good beer, so whilst on vacation I tried to kill a 5ltr Two Hearted Ale one day, and passed that one that night, (in Oct),

Very odd. Every doctor I've ever talked with about kidney stones told me that alcohol should be avoided and beer particularly was the worst thing you could do for gout and kidney stones. If it worked for you then great. Me I drank a lot of Tart Cherry Juice when I had a stone and it seemed to act like a super diuretic which of course helps flush the little bastards out.

I am a urologist. I generally prescribe allopurinol only when the blood level of uric acid is high. If that is normal, then I try to alkalinize the urine with something like potassium citrate. You need to make about 2.5 L of urine a day as well. This is obviously very difficult as you have to drink at least that much if not more water.

I'm on Potassium Citrate, 1620mg twice a day. Vitamin B6 100mg once a day, and Hydrochlorot 25mg 3 times a day.

I carry a 48oz bottle with me everywhere and at least fell it up at least once a day.

I have adjusted my diet and cut out or minimize big factors.

With all that. I still get multiple kidney stones a year. Right now, I have been passing blood for a week (actually, tomorrow will be a week), I have had slight to medium pain since last Wednesday.

So, I'm not sure how well this stuff is working.

never any stones. My age now is 71yrs. Started about 8 yrs ago with 100mg Allopurinol daily due to Gout in the feet. Would have to stop and think about wishing it even on my worst enemy. That bad. But would have episodes ever so often and have to double up on meds. About 4 yrs ago doctor upped it to 300mg daily and no return episodes. Good luck. .................. drill sgt.

53 years old, calcium oxalate stones since 1985 in Basic and Infantry School. 50ish kidney stone related surgeries, can’t tell you how many stones I’ve passed but I still have 20 or so in a bottle from years ago. Went in for PCNL surgery and they hit the renal artery before sending me home. A week later I was fairly well bled out and fighting for life. After a week of surgeries trying to stop the bleeding while saving the kidney and giving me blood finally got it but left only 23-25% function in that kidney. Had to have it removed in 2009. Been on potassium citrate ever since and it’s knocked my stones down by 99% my best guess. It’s been heaven sent.

I thought so to, and questioned him when he said good beer ,

I asked what he considered to be good beer and he asked what brands I drank

he stopped me after I had named about a dozen micros and some English and Belgian ales and he said I would be good,

maybe since my stones are Calcium Ox ??

re the amount of water or fluid intake,

I usually have cereal for breakfast (guessing 6-8 oz of milk?)

Tea at work (English breakfast, was told to cut back or quit this but one cup (well sometimes 2) is my vice

usually a bottle of water before lunch,

beverage of some sort w lunch,

water again in the afternoon,
beverage w dinner,

a couple beers, glasses of wine, or a few bourbons in the evening, (not all at the same time, and not every evening, or I may just have one)
usually 2 more glasses of water during the evening,

I generally drink 8oz before bed,

yes, I get up in the middle of the night with a full bladder, and drink at least 6oz (small glass at the bathroom sink) when I make my water withdrawal,

repeat the next day

more water if working and sweating (yard work etc)

generally speaking if my pee is yellow, I drink more water,

seems to help the stones go thru
