This. I usually like to start each visit by offering the tech an energy drink or coffee as we're talking over the problem. Sets a tone that says, "Hey, I appreciate you taking the time to come out.". Remember, it's not their fault your shit is broken.

Happened to me all the time. Pissed off it took three weeks to get a new control board for oven, pissed off the HVAC tech misdiagnosed something and had to make three trips, pissed off because they didn't read the contract *they* signed, pissed off last electrician they sent didn't have enough experience, pissed off at call taker for warranty company, etc. The common thing to all was I was not involved in any of those things. I'd try to set things back on track when I sensed they had been burned in the past. I'd explain I'm there to help them, I'm an expert, and I will solve the problem for them if covered. I'd then tell them if it's not covered I'd give them an estimate to do it outside.of the warranty. Most would settle down and allow me to work my magic. For those that didn't, I interpreted the rules in the strictest way possible. For those that were outright combative I'd simply walk away as they begged me to stay. Amazing how quickly their attitude changes when they realize that they shitty attitude was going to cost them an additional day off work and delays in repairs. The hardline was if you cussed at me or got in my face, 100% walking off the job. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

Deep down, alot of people are assholes. It is more evident when such people spend money. You see this alot when people talk down to food servers or flight attendants. You even see that here on Sigforum when people tell cavalier stories about how they left groceries on the conveyer or product on the counter and walk away when some minor inconvenience occurs that is well outside the responsibility of the cashier (like a company policy requiring ID for alcohol purchases).

We have Excel Energy M(MN) appliance insurance on everything. Our AC went 3 years in and all was covered except the $800 coil. Shit that was the biggest cost. They always have the winning edge. Fine Print - very Fine - Known shitty China Made parts - Not Covered - Over all it's been worth it - Ice Makers, Washer repair - Water Heater control and zink rod. Furnace Motor, Condensation pump.
