Got the hose in and got the front brake bled (after re-reassembling the master cylinder in the right order... ) and found that the sight glass on the MC had deteriorated to the point that it was leaking. Found a replacement piece on Fee Bay rather than replacing the entire MC.
Mufflers are mechanically sound but a lot of surface rust and some fairly serious rot where the inner baffle was welded to the outer shell. New mufflers are stupid expensive and won't be considered until I decide the long term fate of the bike.
Excavated all that and patched it with JB Weld Extreme Temperature exhaust repair paste. Supposed to be good for 2400°
Once that was sanded down and formed (as well as possible considering the damage) to the original shape, I scuffed up what was left of the chrome and hit it with a couple of coats of VHT High Temperature primer. I'll do a final coat of VHT Gloss Black after that cures for a day or so.

Waiting on the replacement pod filters for the carbs after the Amazon/UPS fustercluck. Once they arrive I can start investigating carb jetting. This message has been edited. Last edited by: PHPaul,

Nice, I love the 80's Japanese bikes
My 85 MaximX I restored a few years ago, this thing was a screamer with a seemingly infinite RPM
I have given up bikes after a soccer Mom pulled out in front of me, sending me flying like Superman
If I can find a pic, I did a resto on a 85 Nighthawk 650 too

One of the problems with the CX is that the air filter is missing. It's a one-year-only item, NLA from Honda and by all indications, no one is making a reproduction filter. No market for a one-off.
The usual solution is to go with pod filters which is fine but that creates it's own set of issues: The carbs have to be re-jetted for the increased air flow and due to the cylinder arrangement, the carbs are angled towards each other and standard pod filters are long enough that the outer ends interfere with each other. Being as they're foam they'll deform enough to fit, but it isn't ideal. Also the overflow tube from the radiator runs between the carbs and interferes with the filters.
After thinking about it for a bit, I realized that the original boots between the carbs and the air box are "re-angled" to make them parallel where they enter the air box. It occurred to me to make an adapter that would allow me to connect the pod filters to the original airbox boots:
I drew one up in TinkerCAD and printed a prototype on my 3D printer. I think it should work fine, just need to tweak a couple of dimensions.

Fun thread, Paul! I’m not a gearhead, but I enjoy watching someone tackle a project like this, if you’re fabricating parts, I’m in.

Ha! There’s a customer I had years ago. He wouldn’t buy any guitar that wasn’t tobacco sunburst finish. Didn’t matter how different they looked, but they had to be tobacco sunburst, or at least awfully close.

The CX project has been on the back burner for several weeks due to the fact that the next step (tuning and syncing carbs) needs to be done outdoors.
Another issue with the bike is that the side covers are missing. They are a one-year only item and about as common as honest politicians. The one place I found any wanted $200 per side for them. Yeah...uhhhhh...Nope!
So, I think I'll try making my own out of aluminum. Always wanted to try some tinbending, and finally copped a 15% coupon that I could use on the Horror Fright English Wheel.
Life will be in the way for a few days before I can commence with the finger-pinching and turning perfectly good metal into scrap.
