The Supreme Court’s ruling in Heller that the Second Amendment protects the rights of individuals to keep and bear firearms caused a number of state legislatures to allow students with permits to carry their weapons on public college campuses. Texas did so in 2015 and a group of University of Texas professors filed suit to block the law, arguing that it violated their First Amendment rights because it supposedly made them afraid to speak.

The court that heard their case sensibly ruled against them. But what about their claimed fear that allowing guns on campus would lead to a surge of violence?

In today’s Martin Center piece, Joe Warta looks at the record and finds that the Texas law has not led to any gun violence at all.

He writes, “Since the campus carry law’s implementation in 2016, it has been clear that the law has not put students at risk for firearm-related violence. Professors and students opposed to the law produced a great uproar over a non-issue. But the court decided that dubious claims of academic freedom do not allow public school professors to violate students’ Second Amendment rights. This time, emotional outbursts on campus could not dictate policy and the Texas legislature produced a model reform for other higher education systems.”

Of course, there was never any reason to believe that campus carry laws would cause any violence; Americans with permits to carry are among the most law-abiding of all. The anti-gun rights crowd will always yell about their irrational fears. It’s a good thing that some state legislatures ignore them.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

As far as I know, no law permitting concealed carry can be linked to any rise in gun violence. As the piece notes, permit holders are hyper-law-abiding.

But facts don't concern the antis. They know what they know. Even when they are a bunch of professors - intelligent, open to data . . .

I thought I read/heard something just a couple of weeks ago that the academics down in Austin were appealing the decision to a higher court. Which tells me it’s not their money being spent.

2016? One could simply look at Utah where there's been Campus Carry (and even kindergarten carry) for well over a decade and not a smidgen of increased risk to student or teacher.

We all know this isn’t about increased danger; it’s about a decrease of control on the left. Before you know it, law abiding citizens will be demanding to be able to protect themselves everywhere!

That, and I don't recall hearing of a school shooting in that time frame in Utah. Hmm, what a coincidence.

It is a proven fact that concealed carry permit holder are charged with less crimes than even Law Enforcement Officers.

Report: Concealed Carry Permit Holders Are The Most Law-Abiding People In The Country

https://www.dailywire.com/news...st-law-aaron-bandler

A newly-released report suggests that concealed carry permit holders are the most law-abiding citizens in the U.S.

The report, written by Crime Prevention Research Center president John Lott, notes that it is "very rare for permit holders to violate the law" and compares the crimes committed by permit holders to police officers and the general population. The police committed 103 crimes per 100,000 officers, while the general population committed 3,813 per 100,000 people, 37 times as much as the police crime rate.

And yet, the same metric shows an even lower crime rate for permit holders.

"Combining the data for Florida and Texas data, we find that permit holders are convicted of misdemeanors and felonies at less than a sixth the rate for police officers," Lott writes. "Among police, firearms violations occur at a rate of 16.5 per 100,000 officers. Among permit holders in Florida and Texas, the rate is only 2.4 per 100,000.10 That is just 1/7th of the rate for police officers. But there's no need to focus on Texas and Florida — the data are similar in other states."

The report found that while concealed carry-permits have surged since 1999, the murder rates have declined:

According to the report, the permit holder total surged by 190 percent from 2007-2015, and in that same time period violent crime declined by 18 percent, as well as murder rates by 16 percent. Additionally, "25 states with the highest rates of permit-holding experienced markedly lower rates of murder and violent crime," according to Lott.

States that allowed for concealed carry without permits had a 31 percent lower murder rate and 28 percent lower violent crime rate than "the seven jurisdictions with the lowest percentage of permit holders."

The main takeaway from the report: concealed carry permit holders are the most law-abiding group in the country and are a deterrent to crime.

"The type of person that would go through the process, one in which you can often lose the license for fairly trivial offenses,” Lott told The Daily Signal. . "They are reluctant to use the the guns in a wrong way because they have a lot to lose if they do something wrong."

We have had campus carry for a few years and we have not had an incident. No bloodbath, no shootouts on the campus lawn, and no assaults over 1st amendment rights.
The scariest thing for me is these kids that ride the battery operated skate boards at 40mph between buildings.
