I have a boiled eggs question. Login/Join

Last night I grabbed four eggs from the fridge and set about boiling them for quick breakfasts later this week. Water in the pot, eggs in the pot, boil for 20, let sit to cool. I can handle that.

Until I totally forget about them.

This morning I headed for the kitchen and found my eggs, still sitting in the pot (with water). They sat to cool, alright. All night. I put them in the fridge, but I still wonder.

Naturally, my question is: "are they okay?"
I hear Mom's voice in my head... "if in doubt, throw it out!" But at the same time, I know of a lady who'd boil a dozen on Sunday and put them in a bowl on the counter. Her husband ate an egg or two every morning, with no ill effect.

What do you know? "Bear the cost of four wasted eggs and don't risk getting sick," or "Nothing to worry about, people have been treating eggs that way for eons."

Question:
Are these eggs okay to eat?

Choices:
A-okay! Chow down.
No stinking way. Be free of them.

Theoretically, boiling them killed any germs, and sitting submerged in boiled water overnight, well, what could possibly go wrong?

(Bearing in mind that I have eaten, without ill effects, a couple of cartons of yogurt that expired months before I got to them)Wink

Also Q ^^^ is a bonafide Doctor and he sez they’re GTG.

I would not eat them. However I am paranoid of food poisoning and rarely trust what I make for some reason.
On a related note, I love hard boiled eggs however I never been able to successfully make them.
Sam’s has started carrying a dozen hard boiled eggs packaged in twos with an egg expiration date of about 2 months out.
The only listed ingredients are eggs and Citric acid. They taste excellent and are $7 a dozen and I ate two yesterday that was the day of expiration and did not get sick so honestly I think they’ll be fine.
I have eaten deviled eggs that have sat on the table for a couple days and they were fine too but honestly would not do that again.

I got food poisoning from hard boiled eggs last month. One day of cold sweats and body aches, two days of vomiting, and five days of violent diarrhea.

In Europe they don't refrigerate eggs, so boiling them for 20 minutes then leaving them out shouldn't be an issue.

The eggs are fine to eat but dude, your method for making them hard boiled could use some upper crust refinement in a biggly way.

If you're trying to make golf balls you've found the answer but not for tasty hard boiled eggs.

Assuming you're using large eggs:

1. Put the desired number of eggs in a pan and cover with an inch of cold water.

2. Turn on the heat to get the water boiling and once it's boiling, cover and reduce the heat to a slow rolling boil.

3. Cook this way for 8 mins, 9 for extra large eggs. This will give you firm yolk with a barest hint of soft in the middle.

4. Immediately after, pluck out the eggs and put them in an ice water bath and leave them for 10-15 mins. I mean an ice bath with water and not just a water bath with some ice. This instantly stops the cooking and keeps the eggs from getting the green ring around the yolk. The ring is not a mark of accomplishment.

Is it safe to eat hard-boiled eggs left out overnight?

It is not safe to keep hard-boiled eggs at room temperature for long, and refrigeration is necessary if they will not be consumed within a few hours. If taking to a picnic or packing in a lunch, be sure to keep the eggs in a cool place.

Add a teaspoon of baking soda to the water.

Best solution I know of is to submerge hard boiled eggs from the pot into a bowl of ice water. Shells don't stick for me that way after being quick cooled.

Re: flashlightboy's method, I prefer to steam them over already boiling water as it is much more accurate timing. There's no guessing as to when "boiling" actually starts. Get a good rolling boil going, put the eggs into a steamer and set on top, cover and start timer. Perfect every time.

Steam actually has more energy in it per unit than boiling water which is why a steam burn is more more nasty. I'll have to try that.

But I like that we're elevating the boiling eggs conversation.

My ex was an awful cook. A dreadful, TERRIBLE cook. However, she'd steam eggs and they were, as Gustofer stated, perfect every time.
