Wow, What Happened To Kohl's (Department Store)?

PASigWow, What Happened To Kohl's (Department Store)?
I had a family thing Saturday night and needed a dress shirt and a nice sweater and headed to my local Kohl's department store Friday night.
It felt very sad and run-down and it was VERY slim pickings on any men's clothing whatsoever. I could swear they were pulling old stuff out of storage that was like 20+ years old and putting it on racks and shelves just to make it look like they had anything!
There was virtually no Christmas décor or music or anything to indicate that we were 3 weeks out from Christmas, it just felt very depressing and dead there.
My wife said the same, she suspects stores are pulling old clothing out to make it look less sparse out on the sales floors.
WTF

AeteoclesFairly certain that Kohl's is headed the same direction as Sears.
I'm in the store fairly often, as I can make Amazon returns in-store at Kohl's to save on return shipping. I almost always get a $5 Kohl's cash credit to spend in-store. Nearly always walk away without buying anything, even with a whole hearted attempt to try to spend the credit.
Everything they stock is low end mass market junk, marked up a few hundred percent. Even with $5 in-hand, I can't find anything that presents a good "value" except for baby cloths that have already been marked down to clearance. Nordstrom's, Neiman Marcus, and Bloomingdales all present better "value", despite most things costing more.

HRKThey all are, people don't go to malls much anymore, the ones here were darn near empty over Black Friday.
Guessing most has to do with people shopping early to avoid missing out on gifts for the holidays, same for clothes.
Add in the shipping issues, COVID Mania, lockdowns, etc..

Not just junk, but expensive junk.

BBMWThey used to be pretty good. I still have a fair amount of stuff I bought there. But, yes, they went downhill and have become useless.

ensigmaticMy wife used to shop regularly at Kohl's, Target, Sears, Mervyn's, Hudson's, and JCPenny.
I actually used to go with her, from time-to-time, to do a bit of window-shopping, myself.
Well, Hudson's, Sears, and Mervyn's are all gone. Kohl's (as you've seen), Target, and JCPenny don't have much of interest any longer. So, not only do I no longer join her on such expeditions, but she no longer goes to what remains of such stores, much, herself.
Sad that we're left with Amazon, Costco, Sam's Club, and Walmart

For the rare occasions I need things like dress shirts and so-on I go to the
Men's Warehouse about 1/2 hour away.
I used to
love going to Hudson's at Christmas time. They'd always have somebody playing Christmas tunes on a piano set up near the mid-floor escalators. *sigh*...

fiasconvaMy wife had the same experience this weekend at Kohl's while looking for dress shirts and polo shirts for my son in law. She was very disappointed in them.

arfmelAt the Kohl’s I’ve visited, the only line is at the Amazon return kiosk.

911BossThe one I go to is in good shape and always well stocked.
I use it mostly for Amazon returns, but always spend the $5 coupon, even if it is just to buy a couple candy bars. It’s like free money

petrConsidering that most of the clothing is made in the south Pacific and that there is a shipping issue going on right now, it makes sense. However, most "fashion" these days is "retro" it will look like 20 year old clothing is on the racks. Hell, New Balance shoes look like they are right out of a Three Company episode!!

spunk639These retailers not having any goods coming in is all a fundamental part of Build Back Better, you can appreciate your old stuff more, and just accept it, getting new clothes, come on man!

PowerSurgeI hit their clearance racks in the late summer and late winter. Only time you can get a reasonable price on their overpriced clothes.

YooperSigsKohls has gone downhill in the Yoop too. But unless you opt for WalMart or Meijer, its the only other store for clothing.
Once a month Kohls would mail me a $10 off coupon for about anything in the place. I have not seen any of those for a couple of years now.

I used to do pretty well on those, particularly with a 30% off coupon added. Sometimes even find Lee jeans in my size for <$10 net. Last few times I've been in there though, pickings have been slim.

All brick and mortar stores were headed the same direction as Sears, and Blockbuster, and Borders Books, before this pandemic BS. Now that everyone has been almost completely forced online for the vast majority of their purchase needs, brick and mortar stores are rapidly being pushed out of existence.
