Hell yes. Saw this on the BBC news last night.

Someone should tell the US media, and most sports commentators, that this is what heroism is.

"I vowed to myself to fight against evil more completely and more wholeheartedly than I ever did before. . . . That’s the only way to pay back part of that vast debt, to live up to and try to fulfill that tremendous obligation."

Alfred Hornik, Sunday, December 2, 1945 to his family, on his continuing duty to others for surviving WW II.

French police are different than we are used to.

My inlaws have advised me, “do not mess around if you have contact with them.” For one thing, they don’t read you your rights, because you don’t have any.

As far as I saw, the gendarmes and their families all live in a compound, a base, the gendarmerie, apart from others, although it may be in the midle of town. I can’t say this is universal, but it is often the case, every case that I saw.

I don’t recall seeing any fat cops. Fat people are less common in France anyway, of course.

All this points to a dedication, an intensity of purpose, or so it seems.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

When you had the votes, we did things your way. Now, we have the votes and you will be doing things our way. This lesson in political reality from Lyndon B. Johnson

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." - Justice Janice Rogers Brown

Sadly, I know what you mean, and agree.

Ditto on everything. I've gotten the same education from my in-laws.

And I hope the french people appreciate this man as much as we here appreciate his selfless actions.

An unfortunate aspect of a citizenry that doesn't respect police or, those in any other uniform service. The flip-side is, the rights we're familiar with in this country, don't exist there, beatings and detention days/weeks without a hearing is apart of the program there. They're pretty tolerant but, when they're let loose, you better get lost.

Carcasonne is famous for it's massive fortress, and that region it's foie gras, problems like this are usually in the big cities like Paris and Marseille. Hopefully, LtCol Beltrame is properly recognized by it's press.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

FWIW - The French Gendarmerie are NOT a police force as is generally understood in the USA. The National Gendarmerie is one of two national police forces of France, along with the National Police. It is a branch of the French Armed Forces placed under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of the Interior—with additional duties to the Ministry of Defense. Its area of responsibility includes smaller towns, rural and suburban areas, while the Police Nationale —a civilian force —is in charge of cities and downtowns. Due to its military status, the Gendarmerie also fulfills a range of military and defense missions. The Gendarmes also have a cybercrime division. It has a strength of more than 100,000 personnel as of 2014.

You will recall that the late Lt Col Beltrame had served in Iraq, where his actions had earned him the Silver Star, France's second highest bravery award. Such items are not dished out with the morning mail call.
