SALT LAKE CITY — University of Utah nurse Alex Wubbels will settle for half a million dollars with the Salt Lake City Police Department and the University of Utah, her lawyer said in a press conference Tuesday.
In August, Wubbles was arrested on the job by Salt Lake City Police detective Jeff Payne after the nurse refused to let the officer draw blood from an unconscious patient involved in a police investigation. Payne has since been fired and another officer involved in the incident has been demoted.
U. hospital officials announced changes to protocol with law enforcement since the incident, but Wubbels' attorney, Karra Porter, said the nurse wishes to see further action to update policy.
Wubbels will donate part of the settlement to the Utah Nurses Association and will spearhead a campaign designed to end nurse abuse, Porter said during a press conference. She will donate another part of the settlement to help others in the state gain access to body camera footage for no charge.

A name that will go down in infamy - at least at police academies across the nation.

This is getting a bit silly. Nurse abuse? Really? Because one cop did something stupid now there is going to be some national movement, spear headed by Wubbels, to protect nurses from the ultra violent jack booted police officers who call us three to four times a night to help them in the their duties? What a crock of shit. Half the guys on my patrol shift are married to nurses. Oh brother. More victims looking for a cause that isn't...

Actually, its the kind of thing that takes place when people turn up with unearned funds. Read about lottery winners, or those who win unexpected largess from settlements. Same difference. Could be they don't know what to do with it, or more likely, someone with undue influence has their ear. Maybe even what kind of nurse abuse. Way back, maybe 50 years ago, we used to take nursing students out with the intent to sexually abuse them. They mostly liked it and were willing participants. No, I don't know why but I married one.
I'm guessing the good nurse in this story is financially set. Could be inheritance or a hubby with a good job. It doesn't matter.
And for the above poster who suggested the police officer who caused this whole mess should be the one paying. Well, I agree that he should. He was/is a jerk. But he's going to skate with his only penalty being he's fired. He could also be viewed as retired. All this little series of events did was to hasten the time table for it. And prevent him from extracting even more of the city's funds.

Does the IRS tax the income from that settlement?

Statistically nursing is a dangerous occupation. I don't see anything wrong with a campaign to draw attention to the dangers they face day in and day out. The average person likely has no idea.
That said I don't see what difference spending money on that type of campaign will accomplish. I don't see "public awareness" making any real difference.
$500k. That's low. Did she get her lawyer from a late night UHF TV ad or something.
It's my understanding that settlements like this are taxed. Leaving here with ----- not enough money to retire.

It's low based on what exactly? People that are wrongfully convicted of crimes and spend decades in prison get a couple or a few million dollars. Half a million dollars for an hour or two of her life seems to scale.

I believe in regards to nurse abuse, it isn't referring to police occifers abusin' nurses.
There is a serious, widespread issue with patients or family members of said patients, assaulting nurses.
This dude took off the handrail on his bed and commenced to attacking these nurses late one night.
This happened in Boston. Nurse got kicked repeatedly, she had a torn rotator cuff, damage to her humerus.
You aren't dealing with the sanest or safest people as a nurse or nursing assistant. Somebody who is having psychotic issues or medication complications can be damn dangerous.
A well balanced breakfast being necessary to the start of a healthy day, the right of the people to keep and eat food shall not be infringed.

ER nursing is simply dangerous.... I would refuse to let my wife work in an ER.
Hospital administrators will always try to "hush" these kind of reports because they're bad for business.
Besides , " a nurse is a nurse" .....we'll just hire another one.....
Hospital administrators are nasty, heartless people...jmo

If you think the extent of the damage is an hour or 2 of the Nurse's time, you are badly mistaken.

I'd rather see her get 500K than some gangbanger's family get millions for a "bad" shooting.

You commit assault and battery on a nurse, it's a felony in many states, rightly so in my opinion.

My first thought on nurse abuse is comments from my wife (retired nursing home RN). Just because someone is elderly doesn’t make them a nice person.
