Ordered them two weeks ago. I'm taking the afternoon off to watch it.

There are tons of eclipse events being planned in the towns that are in the totality path. Officials are apparently expecting crazy traffic:

Twelve million people live along the path of totality, and another 25 million live within one day's drive....But people from all over the U.S. will be flocking to the centerline to experience the rare and amazing celestial event that is totality. As with most crowds of people heading to a major event, there will be traffic — lots and lots of traffic.

"State departments of transportation and police are expecting hurricane evacuation-like traffic," (astronomy professor) Mike Reynolds said.

I will conveniently be in Rolla, MO for "work" on the 21st. Strange how that works out.

yeah uh No Thanks
I'm an hour away from the path of totality, but not traveling to be in the dark for a couple minutes.

I'll take a break and go outside to check out the dimming sky and move along.

For me it's another Y2K event.

cheers~

Are these things really safe?
I'm not sure I want to risk my eyes to these:

Orion Solar Eclipse Safe Viewing Glasses, 5-Pack

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

I'm nowhere near the path for this one. I do have those glasses and we've used them for eclipses, perfectly safe.

I've seen some cloud predictions, wonder how accurate they'll be?

We watched the 1970 solar eclipse in Virginia Beach. We both remember it very well. It's not just the sky getting dimmer; it's a remarkable experience and everyone should try to experience it once.

I wish it were happening about a month later. I have a big auto trip planned for the month of September that would take me up through the zone of visibility, but I won't be able to travel there in August. Bummer.

More importantly, are you ready for the hoards of crazy people that will descend upon your town if you are in the path of totality.
Many EMS teams are gearing up for the big event and treating it as a potential mass casualty event...

I'm 30 minutes from the direct path here in Oregon, never really gave it much thought. I know of one guy who built his house in the direct path on a hill top just for this reason a few years ago. he even has a built in observatory.
