Damn you guys are getting ripped off. We have multiple spay neuter places around here that charge $30-50. They cater to trap spay/neuter release cats. We just did it for one that was coming around my GF’s house for a while. She showed up one day with six kittens.

^^^^^ Yea, we are running low on cats here Big Grin

Google “Spay Neuter Clinic”
30 bucks plus shots, I think we paid maybe 50 for our cat. Our vet recommended them.

They tattooed her so any future vet would know it had been done and transferred her records to our regular vet.

Endeavor to persevere.

My daughter in Brooklyn, NY, is a big time cat lover. Only had one for years until a pregnant stray showed up at her door. She took her in, of course. But this is NYC and the cost of neutering the mother and kittens, plus vet bills for various illnesses has run into 4 figures. She kept the mother and 1 kitten found homes for the rest.

Are cats now on the endangered species list???

My neighbor loves cats and puts food out for them. The result? I have to go around my entire lot and gather up the cat poo every week. Oh what fun.

This!

About a year ago I was crossing the parking lot and heard a kitten crying. Turns she was trapped in a rain water drainage hole. I managed to get hold of her and brought her home. Beautiful little thing. I wanted to keep her but the boss said no dice. So, I took her to the county facility and checked (2x) to make sure it was a "no kill" facility.

I would recommend live trapping the feral cats, and turning them over to a "no kill" animal facility. No vet fees, etc.

I'm facing a similar situation right now.
A momma kitty gave birth to 4 in our window well earlier this year. I waited until they were around 4-5 weeks to catch the kittens by hand as they are old enough to eat canned kitten food and young enough to be tamed, but not quite too fast for me. However, the trap I borrowed for the mother, she would set it off and back right out. I tried multiple times w/ no success.
I went on to domesticate the little bastards from weeks four to seven and found them forever homes from which I get updates on how they are doing. One poor little fella is getting snipped later this week.

Fast forward to this past week. The mother who I couldn't catch has shown up pregnant and just given birth again. I found a place that will take a deposit on a proper trap and I'm going through this cycle again but this time I'm going to make Momma Cat do all the work. I spent over $100 on special kitten food for four when I could have just been feeding mom.
I came across this video and I think I'll be able to execute it as our feral/stray is more stray than feral. It shows the proper trap for catching these cats. I'm hoping to finally get her fixed. Wish me luck.

If you have trouble with catching them in a Havahart trap, tie the door up so the cat gets use to going in the trap and place food all around.

Then when all the food has been eaten, untie the door.

I have the 2 door Havahart(?) trap. The problem being the trigger is in the middle of the trap, effectively halving the available trap area. Hence her backing out. The local TNR takes a full deposit on the better trap, but it's free on return.
But, I understand your point. I can see that working and may even use it w/ the new trap. I plan to bring the mom to the trap loaner anyway at some point for the "N" of the TNR.
