Hanging out on the lake today, and we got buzzed. The NX Air National Guard is retiring their C130 fleet and they made a last lap around the area. Eight of them flew over us this afternoon as we lounged on Lake James.

I apologized for the size of the photo. I'm trying out Imgur and it made it much larger than Photobucket

Try PostImage. Resizing is a piece of cake.

Thanks for the chuckle.

Thanks for the tip V-Tail. I moved it over and got much better results.

One time, in far northern Cal., as I was driving down a forest road, my hunting buddy and I were buzzed several times by a pair of F-14's. We think they were pretending to strafe us. I got out and and pulled my binoculars to get a better look, and they high tailed it our of there. It didn't occur to me that they might have been concerned about me getting tail numbers to call in a complaint. I just thought it was cool.

Oh man, that looks like a great day on the water. Extra cool having those birds droning overhead.

I just got back from Vermont today. Been going the same place on Lake Champlain my entire life. This was the first summer I can remember not seeing the F-16s out of Burlington out over the lake. When I was a kid they put on a pretty good show, flying low and fast and such. They're deployed to the UAE to fight ISIS and show those goat fuckers what's up.

You may not see/hear the F-16s much longer, as I'm certain 158FW is scheduled to get F-35s.

Are they retiring all the 130s, or just the smokey pre -J models? We saw a couple go over in trail formation last week and they were clearly later models. The black "tail" evident in the above picture was missing.

We used to have A-10s all over the place up here. Either on the deck over the lake or buzzing our ski lifts as they hugged the treeline and popped up over the top of the mountain.

We'd see 130s from time to time but A10 was most prevalent.

Active duty AF has switched over to all J models (at least I believe the transition is complete, I have been retired almost 5 years so I am a little bit out of date). This is only the trash hauling birds, I am not sure about the spec ops/EWO birds. Some Guard and Reserve units are still flying H models, not sure for how much longer.

The J model Herk will be around for a long, long time.

I was driving to Duxford, in England, early one morning years ago, and had an A10 practice a gun run on me.
He came low from behind, and looped around in front of me, for a low pass.
It was a little unnerving lol.
He pulled up behind me, and made another pass, wagging his wings as he flew off.

A few years ago the A-6's flying over my house out of Whidbey Island NAS gave way to FA-18's. Last month, I started seeing fewer P-3's and more P-8's.

Word is these are being relegated to firefighting duty out west. The Charlotte ANG unit is transitioning over to C17's (I think)

Last I knew it wouldn't be till 2020. I'll be perfectly happy to see the F-35s instead.
