Our local weekly newspaper that’s been in business since 1879 includes old articles from the past. This was from an article dated 22 January 1926.

A complaint was filed against a 16-year-old high school student for the alleged* theft
“… of a .22 caliber automatic rifle with a maxim silencer from ….
“The boy is said to have examined the gun several times with a view of buying it. Yesterday at noon he called again at the shop and asked … the only man in the building, to sell him 10 cents of oil. When the proprietor was out of right (sic) getting the oil, the boy is believed to have concealed the gun in his clothing by poking the barrel down a trouser leg.
“The sheriff was summoned [and after they went to the barn where the boy was] the gun was found.”

* Yes, “alleged” even in 1926, and I wish I knew what the “automatic” rifle was.

The same day in 1926 the paper ran an article about a high school debate that the local team won.

“Resolved: That the 1924 immigration law be so amended as to admit Japanese on the same basis as Europeans.”

I recall seeing old time newspaper/ magazine ads for maxim.

Had it been written today, the team would have allegedly won.

Back in those days, it was pretty common to use the term "automatic" when it really was a "semi-automatic" firearm. The terminology had not really settled down yet.

That made me smile!

Reminded me of my youth and shooting in our home’s basement during winter. Although I didn’t have a suppressor I did wear hearing protection — it was inside after all! Also, I don’t remember a concern about lead particles in the air so no HEPA system!

That being said, I wasn’t excommunicated to the basement for noise abatement when I shot my bow from my bedroom/long hall way 15 yard archery range…so even when the weather was crap, always had something to do…

When it came to BB and pellet guns, we avoided any untoward situation by just shooting at each other…and praying there was no visible “damage” for Mom to act on when we got home…

For our outdoor pyrotechnic fun, it was all about targeted (at each other) hand launched bottle rockets and tennis or racket balls filled with smokeless powder as improvised hand grenades. Just had to “judiciously” procure the accelerant when reloading was happening and the powder was already out and any “loss by inventory” wouldn’t be noticed.

Fortunately the 70&80s was before the days of no fly lists and “see something, say something”. That being said, I am pretty sure a lot was spoken about and it is a damn wonder we still retain all our digits! Perhaps most importantly, long before my Fleet sanctioned access to the “good stuff…”
