Data breach may have exposed Floridians personal information Hackers may have names of 16,000 Fla concealed weapon permit holders Social security numbers may have been revealed Officials say hackers may have obtained the names of more than 16,000 people who have Florida concealed weapon permits. The department announced Monday they had discovered a data breach of the online payment system that processes payments for applications and permits. Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam has ordered a review of the department's cybersecurity measures. State law enforcement is investigating the breach, which authorities suspect originated from overseas. The agency stated that no financial information was obtained. The department also warned that the breach may have revealed the social security numbers of 469 customers. The agency plans on offering free credit protection for one year to these individuals. The Florida Legislature in 2006 passed a law that made the names of concealed weapon permit holders confidential. Information from the Associated Press was used in this report. So there is now a list of gun owners and all their information circulating on the dark web for sale. If you hold a Florida CWP, maybe it's time to harden the perimeter.

Here is the link to Dept of Ag press release http://www.freshfromflorida.co...ected-by-Data-Breach Services today notified 469 customers that their social security numbers may have been obtained as part of a data breach The social security numbers that may have been obtained had been entered in an online field where either a social security number or Federal Employer Identification Number could be entered. In 2009, the department began only to request a FEIN in this field and stopped the prior practice of requesting either a social security number or FEIN. Additionally, names of 16,190 concealed weapon licensees, which is less than one percent of total number of concealed weapon licensees, may also have been obtained; however, no other individually identifying information of the concealed weapon licensees was compromised. Only concealed weapon licensees who renewed online may have had their names accessed. The department's Office of Inspector General determined that there is no risk of identity theft to these licensees.
