To answer a couple of questions:

I was stopped at a stop light with a row of cars in front of me, and the hole opened up as I was accelerating from the stop, hence I was not going very fast. At first, it felt like a big pothole, and I thought to myself, "I didn't see any pothole." I gave it some more gas to no avail, so I tried rocking it out, but then the back end just dropped. That's when I got out and saw the sinkhole had opened. I examined the truck, and it had rested on the trailer hitch. As the hole opened, it shifted to sitting on the axle and frame.

At first, I wasn't sure whether to just get a tow truck, or call 911. Once I saw how big the hole was, I knew the road needed to be closed, so I called 911. This happened on the campus of the university I work at, so their LEO's responded. Apparently, there are a lot of sinkholes in this area. The utilities people came out to verify it was not a utility cave in, and it wasn't. Having worked for a Public Works department before and having fixed a number of main breaks and sewer cave ins, I knew it wasn't that.

Since I had to teach, the Sgt. offered to coordinate with the tow truck and have one of his officers drive my truck to my parking spot. So, 90 minutes later, I get a text that my truck is parked and knock on my office door with the officers delivering my keys. It was better than Enterprise Rent A Car! They even saved me a piece of pavement as a memento.

I don't think anyone was hurt.

I bet a lot of the owners cheered. That’s one way to get out of a timeshare.

That happened to my bucket truck while on a customer's driveway. I just sat in my seat on a cross country flight when I got the news. Fortunately, a good friend helped my crew arrange for a big wrecker to come out and recover my truck. Apparently, a water line had been leaking and undermined the concrete slab.
