I wish .gov/.mil would let our cyberwarfare trainees practice on the scammers. Make it look like the scammer is sending death threats to their dictator or local warlord, use stuxnet like viruses to turn off their cooling fans and crater their hard drives/SSDs, denial of service, etc.

I got one and told my MIL about it. She said ask them if they can photoshop in a longer d*** into the video. God, I love my MIL! Oh, and by the way, I covered up the camera on my computer years ago.

But there are actual blackmail schemes that get people to do stuff in front of their camera because they think the other person is doing what they see them doing (it's just a video on the other end). This is after the person's social media accounts have been harvested of connecting people. Then the request for money goes on until there's no more to give.
"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I have no camera with my desktop computer. Wife has a laptop w/an embedded camera; however, a small piece of black electrical tape covers it 24/7.

You should be able to block the sender e-mail address. That's what I would suggest.

Exactly. My dad got one of those and he said, "How could they do that if I don't have a camera on my computer?" They can't, ignore it and delete it.

You can, but the email addresses are throwaways. They'll do one batch from one address, then start another address for the next batch. So blocking them is somewhat irrelevant.

I think you made a mistake simply opening the email to begin with. If I don't recognize the sender I automatically delete the email without ever opening it. If I recognize the sender I still may delete the email if I wasn't expecting to receive a email from the sender. With all the scams, phishing attempts and malicious emails being sent out its just foolish to open any email from someone you don't know.

Blocking the email address, or even the IP address/domain of the mail server, is like playing Whack-a-Mole.

PSA There are hacks that can activate the camera on your computer without your knowledge. If you have a camera, cover it when you aren't using it. You can buy slides that cover the lens on a laptop, tape works well. Most external cameras come with a cap.
It isn't anything dubious that you might be doing, it's tracking your everyday activity that might provide hackers details on your life.
Let me help you out. Which way did you come in?
