Check this out. Anybody have a hypothesis on why he is getting the line ends?

The shutter still has to close?

LED lasers are pulsed.

That is why the CCD captures the "beginning/end" of the traces.

He can fix that with LSD...

"Purple haze, all in my brain..."

When I was younger, (early 60s) I came up with the idea of matching mathematically, color, to sound, to pressure (vibration), taste and smell, so that blind people could "see" colors by experiencing the other four senses, as well as a deaf person, and so forth.

Folks thought I was weired and brushed me off.

Ironically, similar things are now helping to solve those things missed by understanding and exploiting the relationships.

And I learned to encourage and let my children try to figure stuff out.

The laser was reflected off a broken piece of mirror. So perhaps as it vibrated the many different ways making the patterns shown, some of those ways reached the edge of the mirror or refracted on part of the broken glass. Really though, there's too much we don't get to observe.

DOH! Thanks for the more experienced answer. However tell us why it wasn't explained as being in each still shot? Or was it?

CCD and laser timing are both electrical in their timing and similar in there rate.

In order to properly determine what is "causing" the "start/stop" of the tracks, the rate of oscillation for both devices would need to be ascertained and then ruled in or out, as necessary.

Then, the edge of mirror, or anything else effecting the trace could be understood.

(My experiences are 40-ish years old in the areas of YAG lasers, and photography, and applications in weapons systems, as well as later dealing with CMOS and CCD shutters, so I am sure there has been a lot of change in that time...)

That is frickin' cool.

Know electronic theory (how lasers work, RADAR, SONAR, RF, etc) and sound theory (acoustical) - the note patterns make sense to me but seeing them displayed like that as opposed to an o-scope; damn, I want to make one of them.

Now I'd like to know what if's in the scene.

What if the stretched material were larger or smaller in diameter?

What if the mirror were closer to the center or further to edge?

What if the stretched shape were a square, triangle, hex, etc?
