Gin drinkers, what do you like?
I prefer Bombbay Sapphire, my wife enjoys her Tanqueray.

I quit drinking totally about 25 years ago. Before I did, it was Bombay Sapphire straight up. Amazing stuff.

IN my cabinet I have Hendricks, Bombay, Tanguray and Bluecoat.
I want to try Drumshanbo Irish Gunpowder Gin. Has anyone had this? Is it good?

Bar Hill is my favorite gin. But it should be noted that they add honey after distillation to the final product. Anything that has added sugar has the potential to make a hangover worse.

Gunpowder is good. A bit more citrus flavor than London Dry gins. They have some good flavored versions like a blood orange or something that I recall was tasty.

Regarding hangovers...

The truth is that the chemistry argument is largely bunk. Most distilled spirits are distilled to very high proof ethanol, then diluted to the final proof. There is very little concern for things like methanol or other chemicals. The taste of vodka is mostly because of the water they add to dilute it to 40%.

You will get lots of crazy arguments about hangovers. Indeed, aged booze in wood can have some chemicals that potentially add to a hangover. But if you want to avoid a hangover and drink heavily, it's practically impossible. Best thing to do is stay well hydrated and don't add a lot of sugary crap or other mixers.

When I'm trying to be good about sugar intake and reduce hangovers I'll just do gin and soda water with some lime. Tonic water has a lot of sugar, so soda water/seltzer or club soda is better and helps with the hydration. Regarding gin brands, Beefeater is a great, inexpensive, highly available London Dry Gin without added sugar.

These go to eleven.

I tried the Irish Gunpowder Gin on a cruise this summer, it was odd, almost smokey. I went back to the Hendricks.

Do tell. I've enjoyed it occasionally for years.

The home bar has the following gins:
--Beefeaters (the "go to" London Dry)
--Henricks (refined excellence with rose & cucumber botanicals)
--Opihr (unusual oriental spiced London Dry)

My mom loves her Tanqueray on the rocks with a twist of lemon.

I bought her a bottle of Roku Gin (Japanese). . .

https://house.suntory.com/roku-gin

. . .to enjoy at our Thanksgiving family get together and she really enjoyed it.

From Google AI Overview -

“Roku Gin, from Japan's House of Suntory, is a premium craft gin known for its unique blend of six Japanese botanicals harvested seasonally (Sakura flower/leaf, Sencha/Gyokuro teas, Sansho pepper, Yuzu peel) alongside traditional botanicals like juniper, creating floral, citrus, and spicy notes, best enjoyed in a classic Gin & Tonic with ginger or in cocktails, reflecting Japanese dedication to seasonal flavor and craftsmanship.”

And from their website -

“Roku Gin celebrates the exceptional flavors of each of Japan’s four seasons at their peak. Meticulously crafted from 6 unique Japanese botanicals picked at the height of freshness, Roku delicately balances a subtle spiciness with vibrant floral notes, gentle sweetness from green tea and Yuzu’s cherished citrus character. Every sip of Roku offers a taste of the best of every season, inviting you to pause and savor the richness of nature’s gifts.”

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up buying Aviation Gin due to the description of their distillation process.

As I indicated, I don't care about "floral notes" or "hints of cucumber". I want something that's not likely to give me a hangover.

I've long been a Bombay Sapphire man, for gin. I've tried others but it is just my favorite for taste.
