I drink very little these days. New Year's is about it. The wife and I have a few cocktails and then I have a pleasant night's sleep.

I'm craving gin for this year's celebration. I like the "super-premium" liquors because I don't get a hangover from them, so I don't mind paying a bit more.

I hear Hendrick's is a great choice, and that's something my local package store has in stock, at least according to their website, but they don't have Monkey 47.

What else? I am not particularly concerned about taste and "floral notes" and all this stuff. I just want to be able to get a load on for New Year's and wake up the next day without suffering. I like vodka and gin. Last year, it was Tito's Vodka.

Aurora Gin, but as I don’t know if they distribute outside of Alaska that may be a gin too far.

The Costco Kirkland gins are terrible.

ETA: I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Empress Elderflower. But definitely outside the scope of what you’re looking for.

Not a big gin drinker but I like and have a bottle of Roku in the freezer. I like Hendricks. There is one more that slips my mind. I’ll post if I can remember.

Gin is my go to alcohol and I make it a point to try local varieties whenever I travel.

That coupled with Fever Tree tonic water and a fresh squeezed lime is a great G+T. It is very refreshing and easy on the palate. Try it I think you and Mrs. Para will really like it.

My usual is Bombay with Fever Tree, but I now feel the need to branch out and do some experimenting.

My younger son is knowledgeable about food and alcohol. He’s a chemical engineer by education and can explain why some alcohols give hangovers and some don’t.

He primarily drinks bourbons, but he left a bottle of gin at my house, a St. George Terroir. I just asked him about it and he said it’s a just a decent gin. I asked about comparing to Bombay Sapphire and Hendricks because I saw those recommendations. He replied “way the fuck better than Bombay Saphire, but I like Hendricks”.

I'll throw in a recommendation for The Botanist. It is a dry gin made in Scotland and uses hand-foraged botanicals. Good flavor without the sharp bite of other gins. It has been my favorite for a few years now.

Magellan is our favorite. Has a slightly milder/smoother flavor than other gins.

While I don't drink gin, I do bartend for my wife. One of her favorites is the Vesper, created by Ian Fleming in Casino Royale. We modify it a little as one of the ingredients isn't available anymore and my wife prefers Vodka over Gin. The original recipe has 2 parts gin, one part vodka:

2 parts Titos Vodka
1 part Hendricks gin (the juniper flavor is good)
1/2 part Cocci Americano (sub for Kina Lillet)

Shake with ice longer than you think you should - there should be "ice on the pond". Serve in martini glass with an olive.
I keep the vodka and gin in the freezer so the ice doesn't melt and water down the martini.

Its been a long time, but Bombay Sapphire or Tanqueray Rangpur were the ones I usually went with.

Have wanted to try Oath, but don't think it's available in the US

I love gin, I will have a martini perhaps twice a week. Bombat Sapphire is our "top shelf" choice, but I also keep "premium" ones like Hendricks, or my favorite Martin Miller (which is hard to find) on hand. Monkey 47 is an excellent gin, but IMO not worth the high price compared to Hendricks or Martin Miller. And we also like drinking Vespers, our recipe almost exactly like robbiedog's, except we stick to the original lemon twist instead of an olive, and add a dash of orange bitters.

The Botanist.

Distilled on the island of Islay, Scotland. (Pronounced eye-la,if you are so inclined.)

Made with botanicals found on the island, it’s distilled at Bruichladdich (Brook-laddie) in a still nicknamed Ugly Betty… and the water source is a stream called Dirty Dotty. Oh, there’s still a lot of juniper in the mix, it’s a dry gin after all.

The botanicals are embossed on the bottle.

It’s almost enough just to smell this gin in the glass, the aromas are fascinating (at least to me). Really good stuff. About $40 the bottle.

My first choices are:
Bombay Sapphire
Boodles

After that I like:
Seagram's
Gordons

Another vote for Bombay Sapphire.

Tanqueray has been my go-to gin for... geez... some 45 years or more?

The only time I drink gin is gin and tonic and then only in summertime.

I haven't tried any other gins since I discovered Tanqueray.

Aviation is, by far, my favorite.

The Botanist isn't terrible.

My parents were big martini drinkers back when a vodka martini was unheard of. They mostly used Beefeater, probably more due to availability/price than flavor. I can drink it if I have to.

One variation they drank when we lived in The Hague, but which I can't stand, is Dutch-style Genever, and those that try to mimic the style (e.g. New Amsterdam). Authentic English/Indian style is much more to my taste.

It does come down to individual preferences, drink what you like. Why should you care what other people think?
