Yes, but this is a game played between the makers and the dealers. The makers build the cars and push them to the dealers, who have to buy them. So it's inventory for the dealers but sales for the makers. Since the makers generally control game the dealers have no choice but to play it that way.

My wife has been driving a 1999 Toyota 4Runner since about 2004. She bought it with 25,000 miles on it and it has 218,000 and she wants a new one. Talk about a terrible time to shop for a new 4Runner. I've been putting her off for about 1 year, but the situation is not getting any better. We're about ready to go in and order one in the next few weeks. We don't mind the wait, but I'd really prefer to get another slightly used one.
Current pricing on 4Runners with ~30,000 ish miles is crazy, about $4k less than a brand new one. sigh.
I'm just hoping we can order one and only pay MSRP.

When a dealer refused my offer, I wrote a check for the amount that I was willing to pay, but did not sign the check.
I put it on his desk and told him to contact me if he wanted me to sign the check for payment in full, including all taxes and fees. I then headed for the door.
He caught me before I got to the street and accepted the offer.

I have a 2020 4Runner Offroad Venture. I keep getting offers from the Dealer to buy it back. Crazy times!

I don't exactly get your point. If you don't want a negotiation with the dealer, then don't. Every dealer in the country will give you an asking price. Walk in or call, ask the price, pay, and own the vehicle. And in this market, at the moment, that's actually what is happening on many if not most vehicles.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The point was a fixed price EVERYONE pays. It is pretty simple. I feel like I am in a Mexican market everytime I shop for a car.
As someone else mentioned, Saturn had that program a few years back.

The local prices where I live, California, were quite high for my 2018 Ram 2500 diesel. Costco had the best deal by far, $8,500 off of list price.
I called a dealer in Oregon, and they ordered one for me $4,000 less than the Costco price. Got a ride to Grant Pass Oregon, picked up the car and drove home. No haggling, no games, just low prices.

Why take away the option to negotiate? Anyone can go into a dealership and pay full retail.

^^^^^^^^^^^ Glad to hear you enjoy it. In Vietnam you negotiate for EVERYTHING. Mexico is a close second. I have better ways to spend my time than with a salesperson.

You don't have to spend time with salespeople at all.
Email: Dear internet sales manager, I am looking to purchase car x, this color, these features. Please provide me with your best price on this vehicle. I will be making a decision this week.
Send it to multiple dealers, gather your offers, and head into the dealer with the best price with your check.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ That is exactly what I did before. Worked ok. Still took longer than I wanted.

I never realized negotiating for a car/truck or trying to get a deal was a 3rd world idea. Is it mandatory for folks in Vietnam and Mexico to negotiate? Do they have the option to pay whatever the salesperson is asking?

In Italy we sailors were told it was an insult to not negotiate. This is also true in most Arab countries.

I'm good as long as they don't do away with Negotiations pretty cousin On Sale.

Because not everyone enjoys the time-wasting, nit-nat, haggle-draggle, gotta-go-see-my-manager, bullcrap that is negotiating with a car dealer.
Saturn's model was entirely no-hassle. No sales lizard in a bad tie would bum-rush you when you hit the lot. There was no pressure to buy, or to move into a different/more expensive model, or to buy add-on trinkets. Essentially, Saturn said, "we've built a car and would like for you to buy it. Come on by and see us, at your leisure." Buying a Saturn was as easy as buying toothpaste. Find the one you want, go inside and pay. Done.
Some people seem to absolutely thrive on the car deal negotiation game. Many of us don't enjoy it a bit.

You never have to do that. Simply pay what they ask, sign on the dotted line and get a "I PAID FULL RETAIL" tee-shirt on the way out. No time-wasting, nit-nat, haggle-draggle, gotta-go-see-my-manager, bullcrap. I hate dealing with lowlife salespeople as much as anyone but I also know it can easily save me a few thousand dollars.

I've had these scubbags try to pull #$%^^ over the years. On a couple of occasions, after making a good deal, they would call me up a couple of days later and say they made a mistake and I needed to give them an extra $2500.00. It never worked out for them but they sure as hell tried. I know friends that gave in and paid it.
