I entered Great Lakes Navy boot camp in January 1969. I remember it as 12 weeks also. I was fortunate to be selected for the drum & bugle corp so I skipped a lot of classes. It was an easy path to A School.

Nine weeks for me at Bainbridge, starting May 1956, then nine months at guided missile school at Dam Neck (the nine months actually stretched to more than that because I was hospitalized for a while with pneumonia / pleurisy and re-joined a later class).
Fire-fighting was a big deal for us, putting out a large oil fire.
