IIRC, back in my Navy boot days we had Fire Fighting and Damage Control training lasting perhaps three days (1977). Make it a week; and nothing but those topics (well, basic military skills to include more close order drill). See what happens. That's where my unit learned to become a team and work together. A big issue will be whether centers like Great Mistakes have what they need to do it. Perhaps in the last 40 odd years, the focus has been on training specialists first, sailors second (definitely a discussion to be held in wardrooms and goat lockers throughout the service).

Having spent 4 years at Great Mistakes as a Recruit Division Commander (RDC) I can only roll my eyes at another program that pushes the woke agenda. This will be time spent pushing CRT, Wokeness, White Privilege, and other liberal issues.

From the article;
-focusing on suicide prevention and character
issues such as sexual assault, hazing and
extremism in the ranks.
-The changes come as the Navy grapples with a
string of shipboard crises in recent years, from
deadly fires to disastrous collisions, and the
military struggles with spikes in suicides as
well as sexual assaults and other bad behavior.
-More recently, the services have been struggling
to root out racism and extremism, after a number
of former and current service members were
involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at
the U.S. Capitol.

Claiming that anything done in boot camp will directly prepare a recruit for duty at a sea command is laughable. The only direct impact boot camp has to duty on a ship is to instill the ability to follow directions and to be willing to understand how little you know and the willingness to learn. There is a reason why every recruit goes to some form of follow-on training prior to reporting to a ship. Even the recruits going as undesignated seaman (think general laborer) go through a few week long apprenticeship training school where they get basic training specific to the role they will be filling. All of the boot camp shipboard based training they get in seamanship and firefighting is general training designed to give them basic exposure to it, not any usable skills in it.

Today’s shortcomings in the military are due to a failure in leadership at all levels. Changes like this are designed to redirect accountability by creating pointless solutions to avoid addressing the root cause of the problem. Attempting to claim that boot camp is not doing enough in preparing recruits for life at sea is a factor in collisions at sea and inefficient firefighting abilities aboard ships is akin to claiming that because some cops are having accidents all trainees must now do a police ride-along prior to starting the academy to better prepare them for emergency vehicle driving on the force.

Thanks for your input…you are 100% correct.

Boot camp tears you don’t and prepares you to learn in a military way.

The fact they are adding this crap is 100% “programming”.

They know that a majority of service people are conservative, so they re trying to squash that…next comes denial of admission to the military based on your political leanings.

Conservatives are being hunted into extermination…and being removed from any position of power or authority.

Boot in ALL services is programming, period.
It's really just a question of what the programming is, and in this case:

sadly I think you’re right on the money.. I got out of the army 10 years ago and we had lots of power points on the whole diversity and sexual harassment thing. It got worse when they made it ok to be gay. I can’t imagine how bad things must be now

Suicides and sexual assaults are not prevented through classroom instruction. I am certain the Russian Navy has this under control.

I trained at Great Lakes and had the fire training as all recruits did in those days (1960's) it was week long and terrible. Hot, heavy gear on, practice fires in cement building with oil on top of water a blaze. As I recall the fire brigade team was 5 men. Nozzle guy responsible for putting out the fire, the spray deflector guy holding a wide spread fine spray nozzle on a long wand to keep the heat off of the fire fighters and 3 manning the hose so the lead guy didn't need to drag it. The fires were allowed to get hotter and hotter as the class progressed. It was scary when the flames where 20 feet in the air and you had to enter that hell on earth building, depending on your team mates to do their job or you were BBQ.

Men fight for liberty and win it with hard knocks. Their children, brought up easy, let it slip away again, poor fools. And their grandchildren are once more slaves.

My understanding is that such training is for officers. Maybe a session or two on standing watch and being alert.

I looked at a video of Navy boot camp the way it is now while it's still 8 weeks. Seriously, the biggest risk to the recruit is having hurt feelings. All the company commanders can do is shout at them. I saw one woman getting a dressing down and she was even giving the person the stink eye and rolling her eyes.

I also saw a video on the marine boot camp and what was weird was women drill instructors animatedly shouting at the male recruits. It was like a parody.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Perhaps all recruits should attend what we knew as Apprenticeship Training, which was two weeks in length? But selogic hit a very good point; I think some top brass actually said the Navy's #1 enemy was climate change. NavyGuy had more FF training than I; unless someone on the team fouled up, we got one pass in the building with the simulated engine room fire. And viewing the films of the USS Forrestal and USS Oriskany fires were mandatory before going outside.

Good thing I had my S.O.S. breakfast this morning, and two cups of coffee. The memory cells are working. Smile

Fuck I was there 9 and we watched youtube videos the last week as a hold division.

Boot camp was funny as hell to me though. But I went through as a 31 year old, didn't get scared or shocked like a lot of younger folks did.

I'd love to go back as an RDC.

Been a LONG time (2/69) but I'm pretty sure boot was 12 weeks.

Don't remember any SERIOUS fire/damage control training, just some basic familiarization.

RE: follow-on training - I reported to GLAKES 2/27/69 and arrived at my first actual duty station 9/1/70 so that was 18 months of boot camp and schools before I did anything of benefit to the Navy.

Eah, I had 2 years of intense language classes, 8 hours of class, 4 hours of homework, for 2 years.

Boot camp was NOTHING compared to A school. While not terribly hard, it was quite stressful the way DLI teaching service members.

Boot camp now is VERY modern, they even have ipads since I went. But the eveolutions for training and the final training sequence are really life-like and high-tech.
