Old roof gone and new roof up tomorrow. I was expecting them next week, but he showed up on the doorstep yesterday and asked if they could do it tomorrow. Alright then. Them Amish folks work quick when they call out the cavalry. Like ants on a hunk of watermelon.

Going from 20 year old asphalt to textured metal.

Anything I should know that I don't whilst they knock this out and I "supervise"? This is my first new roof.

Sounds like a great option, I don’t know details of going metal.

Besides materials, quality of the job & finer details always factor in.

You may find nail pops on your inside ceilings, depends on the style if you have a vaulted ceiling it can happen and cracks as well

Other than that, watch for nails around the house for quite a while, mines 5 years ago and occasionally one pops up.

Yeah, no issues with materials. These folks actually make the roofing around here and I just hired them to do the job. Great reputation with the materials and I can speak to the quality (and speed) of the work. I had three of them complete my shop start to finish in three days.

Yep. There will be tons of old roofing nails deposited on the ground during tearoff. Even if they tear off onto tarps, and go around with a magnet afterwards and collect most of them, there will still be more nails lurking.

It's worthwhile to buy an inexpensive magnetic sweeper on a pole, and give the perimeter several sweeps over the next few days to catch the stragglers. And don't be surprised if you find more here and there while mowing later on.

They're easy enough to find. Just look for them in your tires. Razz

I bought one on the large magnets on a roller over the summer for just this reason. Wink

The upside is that they can't just toss stuff off because of my lawn/sprinkler system/recent rains and wet dirt. The plan was to bring in two dump trailers close to the house. Instead, he said, no worries, we'll just use wheel barrows on the roof and dump them in one spot.

I find walking around barefoot works as well. That way you don’t put holes in your shoes.

On a serious note, I’d consider a magnetic rake. NVM, I see you have one.

My ‘builder grade’ roof lasted about 12 years or so. After that I did a fair bit of research.

My current roof is over 15 years old, still looks great.

Curious if anyone has gone from shakes or asphalt to metal, have you noticed any or much difference in cell coverage?

I get two bars at best and have been thinking that that might diminish.

I went with aluminum shingles last year. 50 year life and they will withstand 165 mph winds.
I haven't seen any cell signal difference.

No hoots. Kind of an Amish/Mennonite cross as I understand it.

I had my experiences with the hoots over on the east side, and I don't think I'd hire them to plow my driveway. Wink

Yep. One guy and his two sons did my shop (30x40) with 12' lean-tos. Three days and I couldn't have been happier. Them folks know how to build shit.

Metal roofs are popular here in the Yoop. One thing to keep an eye out for, since you get snow, is slide off. Lots of our businesses with metal roofs have signs posted saying "watch for falling snow".

Thanks for that yooper. That's been my biggest concern. I have had some soffett and fascia damage from ice dams and run off, which was the main reason I wanted to go with the metal.

I don't know the all of the correct terminology, but my roof is shaped like a cross, and most of the issues that I've had has been in those valleys (?). My though was that with the metal, things would just slide off easily and no more worries. The more I thought about it though, the snow/water/ice could or probably will still collect in those valleys...although not as much because at least part of it is sliding off. Confused

The other issue is the gutters. One side is close to the foundation, so that's a bit of a no brainer...gutters and snow stops. The other side is about ten feet out so gutters or no gutters? Snow stops or no stops? I'd worry with the slide that they'd take out the gutters.
