I love to build things. Just something I learned early on from working with my grandfather, and something I've built on over the years. At this point I'd consider myself a fairly accomplished amateur craftsman given what I've built. That said, I really appreciate this gentleman's skills and abilities. Think about this gentleman the next time you're standing in front of your table saw, or running stock through your jointer or planer, or finish sanding with your orbital sander. Enjoy. Smile

That is some amazing work.

Wow, that is some serious skills on display. I wish I could get my tools that sharp, let alone make something like that.

In a serious luthier college (orchestral string instrument construction) the first MONTH might be spent on ... turning a hunk of steel into the sharpest chisel imaginable. And keeping all of your tools as deadly sharp as possible.

Mike, that man is amazing. I didn't know that type of manual craftsmanship still existed. Thanks for posting this.

Number of hours for that job?

Cost of finished piece?

Compensation/hour?

I have had discussions with weavers and spinners about building looms or spinning wheels. I have said, yes, I can build one, but you can’t afford it. If I was to be fairly compensated for my experience and education, the finished product would be THOUSANDS of dollars over retail of a commercially made item.

Granted, he has exceptional skills, but I am not giving up my power tools because I like his work.

I think you completely missed the point of my sharing this video.

my Mennonite grandpa was very good ,
the crew that he worked with built many barns and out buildings in six different counties in eastern Iowa.
and
in his work shop at home he made over 30 pieces of furniture .

all w/o power tools.

his skills would not match this gentleman's

Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency.
