mrapteam666Lou Holtz has died
I grew up watching, hating, despising Notre Dame except for when they played Miami of Florida. The Catholics vs Cons match up. Growing up in Ohio, and then attending Ohio State, it was kind of expected.
I still follow Ohio State Rugby, and for the last few years, the programs have really developed. In the fall of 2025, OSU played Notre Dame for the championship.
I really wish, I could have played against them. I played against some of the Big 10 teams and a few smaller schools around Ohio (ex. Bowling Green, Wittenburg, Ohio Univ. etc..).. Plus Marshall Univ Of WV)
I knew he had a diverse career and coached at a few teams but he really left a mark in College football. Both as an assistant and head coach.
He served as the head football coach at the College of William & Mary (1969–1971), North Carolina State University (1972–1975), the New York Jets (1976), the University of Arkansas (1977–1983), the University of Minnesota (1984–1985), the University of Notre Dame (1986–1996), and the University of South Carolina (1999–2004), compiling a career college head coaching record of 249–132–7.
Holtz's 1988 Notre Dame team went 12–0 with a victory in the Fiesta Bowl and was the consensus national champion. Holtz is the only college football coach to lead six different programs to bowl games and the only coach to guide four different programs to the final top 15 rankings.
he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant in 1960, at Iowa, where he received his master's degree.[7] From there, he made stops as an assistant at William & Mary (1961–1963), Connecticut (1964–1965), South Carolina (1966–1967) and Ohio State (1968). The 1968 Ohio State team won a national championship with Holtz as an assistant.
Plus....
under Kent State's U.S. Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps, he earned a commission as a Field Artillery Officer in the United States Army Reserve.

Mr.BrooksHoltz coached Arkansas to the 1978 Orange Bowl, against No 2 Oklahoma. Barry Switzer was Oklahoma Head Coach and he was the badass college football coach of the 1970's. Just before the game Holtz suspended 3 players for violating team rules, 2 of them star players. Arkansas was already a heavy underdog and even more so after the suspensions.
To make the story short Arkansas upset Oklahoma by big score. Holtz had convictions and stood by them and I am certain he received heavy pressure to back down. I hope that teaching his players to stand by their beliefs was more important than winning football games.

ch23701I was lucky enough to usher at ND home football games during the Lou Holtz era. I’m not a ND football fan I just did it to get drunk with my buddies after the games. I also heard him speak at a few events in the South Bend area. He was an excellent college football coach and an excellent speaker. Border line comedian at times. Heckuva guy and he will be missed. RIP Lou!!
