U.S. Census includes Delaware and Maryland as "South"

SBrooksU.S. Census includes Delaware and Maryland as "South"
The list the states that they consider to be in "The South" in this article I was looking at:
Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, D.C., Fl, GA, KY, LA, Maryland, Mississippi, NC, Oklahoma, SC, TN, TX, Virginia, and W. Virginia.
I look at a map and I see that Maryland and Delaware are technically no further north than W. Virginia - but it still seems wrong to me.
Also, not sure about Oklahoma, but have no idea where they'd go if not the south...
Not even sure what other locations the census uses... West or SW or NE Why is "The South" a thing if it doesn't include the whole southern half of the U.S. should be SE I would think.
Thoughts ? Don't care ? ( I suppose I don't really care either - but I'll be damned if I'll call a Delawarean a Southerner).

Biden's hoping to carry the south in 2024 now that he's a "Southerner."

I could see that. Not sure why that should define census data though...
Better off doing "Appalachian" or "Coastal" and just have big narrow corridors of similar topography and culture maybe...

trapper189Ya, William Penn and Lord Baltimore really screwed that up for the rest of us with their stupid Mason-Dixon Line.

flashguyWhen I was in grade school, the US was divided into several areas. Those I remember are: the Northeast (ME, NH, VT, CT, RI, and MA); the Atlantic (NY, NJ, MD, DE); the Midwest (PA, OH, MI, IN, IL, WI, MN, MO); the South (VA, WV, NC, KY, TN, AR); the Deep South (SC, GA, AL, MS, LA); the Plains (ND, SD, IA, NB, KS, OK); the Northwest (WA, OR, ID, MT, WY); the Southwest (TX, NM, CO, NV); and the West (UT, CA, AZ). FL is physically part of the Deep South, but not by culture. HI and AK are newcomers and not easily assigned: AK culturally is part of the Southwest and HI is culturally part of the West (I guess).
I may be wrong on some of the boundaries--it's been a long time.
The US Department of Agriculture divides the country into 5 areas:
DE and MD are part of the "Northeast" here.
The Bureau of Economic Analysis has 8 regions and DC:
DE and MD are part of the "Mideast".
The OMB (office of Management and Budget) has 10 regions:
DE and MD are part of Region III, along with WV, VA and PA.
There are only 4 Census Regions, but each has been subdivided into Divisions:
DE and MD are shown as part of the South, which includes all the way west through Texas.
The map of Time Zones--the US has 6--is purely physical based on longitude (roughly):

SBrooksI think the first two maps you provided make the most sense.

Maryland may have been a slave state, but I'm certain it did not secede or join the Confederacy.
Last week I was back there visiting my Mom outside of Sharpsburg, several times I went jogging thru the Antietam Battlefield.

According to an on-line map, the Confederate States were VA (incl WV), KY, MO, AR, TN, NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, MS, LA, and TX. DE and MD were not part of the Confederacy.
Another map has MO, KY, WV, and MD as "Border States". Yet another map shows MO, KY, WV, MD, and DE as "Union states that allowed slavery". (Slavery was the issue that caused WV to divide off from VA--it remained part of the Union.)

Maryland would have seceeded from the Union, or at least would have fractured, if not for the Feds not wanting DC to be surrounded by the Confederacy. There were regiments and batteries on both sides during the war. My GG Grandfather was at Antietam, which started today.

detroit192According to the Mason-Dixon Line Maryland yes Delaware no. But hell there are times I consider North Carolina part of the “Mid-Atlantic”.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't see how Maryland and Delaware could be considered anything but Mid-Atlantic.
