Libs love taxing things, and in Lib-run Oregon they've just passed the nation's first tax on... bicycles? Yes, bikes! http://www.washingtontimes.com...lates-oregon-riders/ In Oregon, a state known for its avid bicycling culture, the state legislature’s approval of the first bike tax in the nation has fallen flat with riders. Democratic Gov. Kate Brown is expected to sign the sweeping $5.3 billion transportation package, which includes a $15 excise tax on the sale of bicycles costing more than $200 with a wheel diameter of at least 26 inches. Even though the funding has been earmarked for improvements that will benefit cyclists, the tax has managed to irk both anti-tax Republicans and environmentally conscious bikers alike. BikePortland publisher Jonathan Maus called it “an unprecedented step in the wrong direction.” “We are taxing the healthiest, most inexpensive, most environmentally friendly, most efficient, and most economically sustainable form of transportation ever devised by the human species,” Mr. Maus said.

Bicyclists don't pay gas tax for use of the roads, so they've got to make it up somewhere.

Too clever by half |
In Virginia, they have been encouraging hybrids, allowing individuals to use HOV lanes, etc. Then they realized they had a problem, and had to create a special tax for hybrid vehicles to make up for the loss of revenue from lower gas tax revenue. In Georgia a couple years ago, they went through a severe drought. Atlanta, begged people to conserve water, and they responded. Of course, revenue from water use dropped, so they increased prices dramatically to make up for the loss. Haha. Coming soon to a bike store near you: "The CaGiaTrek 2.4. This roadbike has 24" wheels instead of the more standard 700/29. Special reduced pricing is available. Also on sale are our full-size roadbike wheels."

I'd throw that "pay your fair share" shit right in their liberal faces. For those bikers who aren't mushy headed live, sorry you have to deal with that nonsense.

If this gets passed, the money will start building up, the spend-o-crats will see this pile of money intended for "improvements for cyclists" and they will engorge themselves at this trough and spend it for any number of their other give away programs. The black market for used bikes sold amongst privates citizens will increase. Due to the bike show loophole these sales will need to be regulated just like a 6 year old kids lemonade stand. The complete rectocranial inversion of liberal thinking could not be more clearly demonstrated. They want less pollution and more bicycles...right? But anything that you tax you get less of. It is a "punitive" action. So they tax bicycles! There is one line of logic that explains it completely though, if you recognize the liberal though pattern: There is never enough money to fund the nanny-state. So when they see people spending money, they are thinking one thing and only thinking one thing: There's people spending money...let's tax it! "Crom is strong! If I die, I have to go before him, and he will ask me, 'What is the riddle of steel?' If I don't know it, he will cast me out of Valhalla and laugh at me."

years ago when they forced the taxs on imported motorcycles with engines greater than 750, all the manufacturers responded by making 700 cc bikes. there is already legal challenges due to the fact the city has no income tax. So the legal costs will probably eat up anything they hoped to make. The only ones supporting this is those who feed off of others work and efforts.

There is no end to financial need in the socialist nanny state. There will never be enough tax revenue for these people. If you drive a car, I'll tax the street If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat If you get too cold I'll tax the heat If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet 'cause I'm the taxman, yeah I'm the taxman

I say good on 'em. Bicycle riders there are not the nicest people plus, they want a full lane of the road designated for them - who and how is that maintenance paid, through gasoline and vehicle taxes? Screw that. If bike riders want those little amenities, let them pay for it just as a car driver who expects his/her roads to be maintained. Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. Knew there would be someone who couldn't help himself and post something like this nonsense. Hey, here's a news flash. A great majority of people who ride bikes also drive cars and buy gasoline. They've already been taxed for using the road. And in any case, the wear and tear that a bike puts on a roadway is nil. ~Alan Acta Non Verba NRA Life Member (Patron) God, Family, Guns, Country Men will fight and die to protect women... because women protect everything else. ~Andrew Klavan

I am not a against reasonable taxation to pay for reasonable infrastructure, military, etc. What I really, really hate is: 1) uncontrolled, unnecessary growth in government well beyond what is necessary and intended 2) complete waste of tax funds -- money that gets used inefficiently, money that funds unnecessary expenditures, money that funds unnecessary organizations, money that funds excessive wages and pensions. We need to wipe the slate clean and start over from scratch. "Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it." BS So based on your statement if my wife and I own two cars we should only pay gas and vehicle taxes on the heaviest one because, after all, the lighter one neither produces as much damage to the road and one is already paying taxes for the roads' upkeep. But let's go a step further - the electric vehicle. No gas taxes. Since they use the road and induce the wear and tear on the road similar to gasoline vehicle of similar weight, they need something which, based on a per mile driven, will allow them to be taxed. But getting back to your statement, you did say a majority of the bike riders own cars - what about the other 49% who do not own cars? If you are good with your statement, then all car owners who ride bikes should be good with picking up the non-car owning bike rider's share - right? Life moves pretty fast. In downtown Pittsburgh they have taken away full lanes of traffic and turned them into bicycle only lanes. Traffic is down to one lane and back yup yet there are two bikes lanes with nobody in them. I have no problem making them pay for the special usage.
