Teen turns gun sale at Vienna Arsenal into attempted robbery, police say

by Angela Woolsey March 12, 2021 at 3:30pm

Vienna [Virginia] police arrested a teenager from Maryland earlier this week when he reportedly attempted to steal a gun that he had agreed to purchase, only to be stopped when the seller drew another firearm.

According to the Town of Vienna Police Department, officers were dispatched to Vienna Arsenal (386 Maple Ave. E) at 4:08 p.m. on Wednesday (March 10) when they received a call about a robbery in progress.

The incident involved a citizen who had posted an online advertisement about a gun for sale and agreed to meet the responding buyer at the Maple Avenue gun shop in order to finish the transaction.

The exchange did not go as the seller planned, as detailed in the VPD’s weekly summary:

The citizen stated that the suspect picked up the gun, said he needed to get the money from his car and began to run away with the weapon. The citizen chased the man into the bank’s parking lot next door, drew his firearm, ordering the man to stop, and walked him back to where the incident occurred. The citizen held him until police arrived.

The VPD says that the suspect initially gave officers false information about his identity, but they later identified him as a 16-year-old juvenile from Maryland.

The suspect was transported to the Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center, where he was charged with grand larceny and false identification.

“He was remanded to the custody of the staff, and the juvenile’s parents were notified,” Vienna police say.

Probably a good idea to go armed and with a buddy on FTF transactions with folks you don't know, gun sale or not...

Trying to steal a gun at a gun shop is about as smart as trying to steal one from a police station.

Back to the original question. My gun show pards and I have seen dozens of face to face sales. Not one "robbery", except as to condition of the gun. The reason no one pulls this stuff at a gun show is because there are so many gun nuts (us included) around.

So far I've been extremely lucky and only witnessed one discharge at a gun show. That by a black guy (who else) who asked a vendor if he wanted to buy a gun. The vendor (we knew him) simply said "whatcha got?", so the idiot pulled out a cheapo .25 auto and fired it into the floor. I'm kind of surprised no one killed him or beat him to death (the same thing?)

Lesson is if you want to be safe, go to a gun show. They're all attended by grumpy old men (me included). Everyone armed, or could be within seconds. Serious guns, not cheap crap. And for the most part, folks who know how to use them.

rburg, I've related my experience with a gun show discharge. I was very lucky that the bullet missed me. Generally speaking, though, they are relatively safe places.

There have been a few here in NH, inside and just outside the show. Race doesn't factor into it as idiots come in all shapes and sizes.

The few I go to these days (and only because a friend is a vendor who gives me the passes) held the show is firearms. the rest is associated items barely related to firearms. Most of the firearms are brand new and readily available at a cheaper price online (or at least back in the good old days). Rarely was a good deal to be found. If I bother to walk around it's the give a look at the used firearms hoping to find something interesting. Haven't yet.

Interesting the different approaches to FTF transactions. I've done a bunch of them and have always encouraged the buyer/seller to meet me in a very public place, but by themselves. I have zero interest in trying to keep up with multiple people. One on one makes it easy and allows both of us to simply deal with each other. So far (knock wood) I've never had an issue with any of these transactions.

This ^^^^^

The one time I did a private, F2F sale, one of my best friends came along, both of us carrying, and the sale was conducted at his gun club. As it happened there were a couple other club members present as well.

Since July 1st, 2020, all gun sales in VA require a name check, thus the seller in this case agreed to meet outside the gun store, presumably to seal the purchase and then go inside to complete the transfer.

I've met someone outside this same gun shop (Vienna Arsenal) for a FTF deal, followed by the official transfer inside the gun store, with no problems.

Agree that FTF sales/transfers at a Gun Show would work well, with lots of FFLs available to complete the transfer.

The criminal in this case was a 16 year old, so no identifying data has been published that I am aware of.
