One of my favorite places. Cape May point is at the southern most tip of NJ. This is the remains of the SS Atlantus, one of several concrete ships that were built because of the iron shortage during WW1 which has been stuck in that spot since 1926, when it broke free of its moorings and wound up where it sits today.

There's a World Two fire control tower right at the point, as well as an old WW2 bunker.

If you've never been to Cape May, it's a beautiful place. We have a house the next island over in Wildwood Crest and spend a lot of time here. Gonna head down tomorrow to walk out to it Big Grin

Today, with ice...

It's been about 20 years since we visited Cape May. I remember it being clean, quiet and not expensive during Summer months.

I also remember Bills Pancake House.

Blueberries pancake...YUM.

If you look out over Delaware Bay you'll likely see my ship over in Bigstone Anchorage.

We'll be sailing for the bay late this evening. This amount of ice in the river is a bit concerning. I have a feeling it's going to be a long night.

Cool photos! And the same technology the Atlantus used was also used in WW11 Mulberry piers, IIRC.

I've seen the concrete bunker, I remember when it wasn't in the water and was mostly surrounded by sand. I've seen the Fire Control Tower but not the sunken ships.

Balze, stay safe. I'm certain you will be busy, but if you happen to snap any photos of ice in the bay and up the Delaware, and you are willing to share once you are in safe, I'd like to show my kids. They are very curious about ships and shipping.

Interesting picture of Cape May in the '70s. We lived on the Mantaloking River in the '70s and it from over solid. Maybe 1977? People drove on the bay and some fell trough.

Well, this was this morning up river by Philadelphia. I'll grab some more pics down in the bay if I can.

The US Selma rests in Galveston bay.
She too was another WWI concrete ship.

Very cool to view when fishing in the bay.

Cape May is special to my wife and I as we were sent there on a surprise honeymoon!
Enjoyed a few days there and stayed at The Humphrey Hughes House.

I imagine you are busy. Thank you very much.

Makes me wonder what things looked like up river near Trenton Christmas night 241-odd years ago. I've seen the Delaware up around that way with big chunks of ice in it. Right now it's very cold on land. I'm guessing colder on the water.

Stay warm as best you can.

The water temp for the river right now is right at about freezing. 33-34 degrees according to our gauges. God help the person who falls in.

Those pics are awesome. I have driven past all of those places many times, sometimes in the winter, but never like this. Amazing. Thanks.
