This evening I found a box of brownie mix in the pantry. "Score!" right?
Yeah, I know... definitely not health food, too many carbs, too much sugar, not at all what this body needs as good fuel. But it's brownies! And there's ice cream not far away. Big Grin

I pointed out said box to The Lovely Girlfriend, who responded dryly with, "check the date."
Some of you may remember my problem with boiled eggs recently (by the way, I didn't eat them). Well, today's discovery seems to bring the next spin of that Pantry Wheel of Fortune.

I turned the box over and saw, "BEST BY 08/03/22," and said, "dangit!"

After a moment of consideration, TLG responded with, "Oh, no! It just says best by that date." Wink

I think she's got a point there... it doesn't say, "Horrible after 08/03/22." Cool

It's a powdered mix, man. It's not as if it already has eggs, oil, or milk in it. I'm thinking we're good to go.

Your thoughts?

God bless America.

It will contribute to insulin resistance, obesity, and high cholesterol. But it’s fine. It won’t cause any acute symptoms.

These go to eleven.

I've always suspected the technical folks give a x years from date of manufacturing, and then the marketing and legal folks switch it to x/2.

It's fine. On dry boxed food and canned goods, those dates are just suggestions.

Its fine. These are dry ingredients, go make yourself some brownies and enjoy.

If this was a cake mix, the baking powder MIGHT not be as active but, I think you're good.

I’d eat it… especially with ice cream!

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

They put a date on such things because they keep a control batch from each lot. That way, if anything happens such as someone supposedly getting sick from it, they can go back to that control batch and see if the problem happened outside of the factory or inside the factory. They can't keep control batches forever because there's a limit on storage capacity so they put a date on the product and after that date or even 12 months after that date, they throw the batch out to make room and they figure all the product from that batch has been consumed already.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I still have the mind of a teenager. At first glance I read “panty” instead of “pantry.”
