The man then shot at the would-be robber, fatally striking him in the head and chest, police said. The man was not injured and did have a valid concealed-carry license, according to police. Area Two detectives are investigating the incident. | ||

About 12:30 p.m., the retired captain was in an open garage of a home in the 500 block of East 89th Street in the Burnside neighborhood when a vehicle driving through the alley pulled up next to him, police said. An assailant got out of the vehicle, pulled out a gun and demanded the man’s property. The 77-year-old took out his own gun and shot at the would-be robber, hitting him in the head and chest, police said. The robber, whose identity was not released, died at the scene, police said. The 77-year-old man was not injured. Both guns were found at the scene, police said. The 77-year-old man, who retired from the department about 15 years ago, has a valid firearm owners identification card and conceal carry license. | |||

Originally from Illinois and understand we are talking the Peoples Republic of Chicago. Being that he was apparently in his garage was the CCW technically necessary? Understand it's likely helping him but in the current climate there what if he didn't have it? | |||

And now come the lawsuits about how the robber was beginning to turn his life around or he was an up and coming rapper who would soon be making millions. The civil suits in these shootings are always far worse on the shooter than the possible criminal procedings. The fellow will likely end up spending every cent he has defending himself or have a huge judgement leveled against him that it is impossible to pay, in effect ruining his life. There should be laws enacted that when it is a "good shoot", civil charges cannot be filed.
