Trainer suspended after race horses test positive for Viagra

Trainer Mike Mudaris is in some hot water in the racing world after two of his horses tested positive for the drug sildenafil, also known as Viagra.

According to Daily Racing Form, Mudaris was given a $17,500 fine and an 18-month suspension when it was discovered two of his horses that ran during the 2016 Del Mar summer meet, had been doping on grandpa’s sex medicine. The horses were disqualified and all prize money was returned.

Mudaris’ attorney said the trainer “did not administer sildenafil to the horses and is being penalized under the absolute insurer’s rule.”

Now I know very little about training horses (nothing, actually), so I do not know why anyone would give a horse medicine for erectile dysfunction. In theory I guess it would make the horse run harder, and for longer than 30 seconds, but I’m only assuming here.

Whatever the case, it’s a stiff penalty.

Being a vasodilator, the theory makes sense that opening up blood vessels to allow more oxygenated blood to reach hard working muscles would improve indurance and performance.

It has to do with increasing blood flow and reducing the restriction in your arteries.
I could see how it would make the horse run faster since it would pump more blood to the muscles.

Race horses sometimes have problems with pulmonary edema caused by the negative pressure that they create when inhaling ( sucking air in). I had heard of them being treated with Lasix ( a water pill that makes you urinate).

Viagra dilates all sorts of blood vessels including the vessels in the lungs. Some premature babies will have very constricted blood vessels in their lungs ( pulmonary hypertension). The docs are sometimes giving these babies Viagra ( or similar drugs) to help improve the circulation in the lungs ( and ability to absorb oxygen).

I'm guessing ( only guessing) that they are giving Viagra to horses to improve their lung function).

"Trainer suspended for giving Viagra to improve performance"

My first thought when reading the title was that this was about a female dominatrix.

Kind of disappointed it isn't. Big Grin

My wife's aunt was what we call west Tennessee country. She treated all her ills with vet medications. Said they worked just as good and they were cheaper. Worked well for awhile, till she died of heart failure. Used horse liniment for her arthritis and stuff. Told my daughter that she would get crossed eyes from sucking her thumb. Did not happen thank God.

Does viagra give the horse a boner? Wouldnt that take away from available blood flow. Not to mention for a horse that would be like running with the kick stand down.
