Man trying to get rid of bees sets home on fire
August 4, 2017
A man’s attempt to burn bees out of their nest backfired after the ill-advised extermination method caught fire to a Georgia home, destroying most of it.
Fayette County Deputy Fire Chief Tom Bartlett tells The Associated Press that the homeowner lit a stick on fire last weekend, then tried to poke the flaming stick up into the bees’ nest near the roof to get rid of them.
That set fire to part of the house, with the flames then spreading through the attic and engulfing much of the structure.
No serious injuries were reported, but photos of the devastation show that the blaze charred the entire roof of the house.
The fire happened in the Fayetteville area, about 20 miles south of Atlanta.

And a beekeeper would have come and got them with no charge. They want bees.

This late in the year we don't like to collect swarms, if we do we call them welfare bees because it's too late in the year for them to establish comb and enough food to live on through the winter. They'll have to be fed and tended to in hopes that they'd live to spring. It's just not worth it economically. However, a swarm collected in the spring is valuable and would have enough time to be viable on their own. This will vary as the further north one gets and less true the farther south, due to better weather.
And this is assuming it's a free pickup, no money changes hands. A beekeeper may charge $$$$ just to help someone get bees out of their home with no real intention of over wintering them. Then he's just basically an exterminator.
I have a friend with close to 1,000 hives and he just won't mess with them this late in the year due to our location.
