The state pensions include $58,560 a year she’s already receiving from her earlier career as an educator, and she’ll be adding almost $71,000 a year for her time in elected office.

They can't touch the earlier pension. The second one is up for grabs is found guilty of a crime.

But isn't this the double dipping everyone was crying about? How long was she in that position to get a decent pension?

Nobody negotiates anything. Supervisor of elections is an elected position in Broward County for a four year term. She is in her forth term. Charge her, impeach her, or vote her out of office.

Well if she fights her resignation, and is then charged with a crime, she could then lose her pension and still be without a job. That would be a win-win for everyone.

As much as I despise this woman, accusing and charging someone does not automatically equal conviction. Do the Republicans have good evidence against her to assure a conviction? Or, do they just mouth off cheating and fraud without any convincing evidence?

^^ It sounds like that's the poker game the two sides are playing. The Florida government (or at least governor) is gambling that they can prove wrongdoing; Brenda The Agenda is gambling that they can't.

If Wikipedia is right, Snipe was born in 1943 and is therefore 75. That's time enough to put in twenty years in one position and twenty years in another, so two pensions wouldn't come as a shock.

Brenda admitted that she destroyed ballots from the election two years ago. They were to be kept for about 22 months, the loser wanted to inspect them, and she admitted that she destroyed them early. This is against the written law, but I am not sure if it is criminal or civil.

On this election, they can prove that she opened mail in ballots early and other deeds as well.

The article states that she has been working for the Florida state government for 50 years, first as a teacher then as the Broward County election chief.

I don't know what teacher salaries are in Florida, but I can tell you for my county here in the northern part of Virginia they are pretty low. I assume that there is a trade-off in the you accept a low salary when you work to have a guarantee of a pension when you retire.

Based on her age she started in government at a very different time. I doubt you will find many jobs with similar pension benefits these days outside of first responders and military.

As an aside, I don't know this individual and I don't know her history. But I do know that any time you are dealing with large populations whether it be votes, dollars or anything else, there is a certain amount of error involved. You can always spend more money to increase your accuracy in whatever you are counting, but money is always finite (unless you are printing it) and there are competing priorities.

What I find to be very curious is how close elections are becoming.

I don't think it is going to be worth the expense to ensure we have accuracy below a half percent in elections. And when we have these races where the difference between the winner and loser is less than half a percent, it will likely devolve into the mess we saw in Florida.

Florida Judge Sides With Brenda Snipes Over Suspension

Judge Mark Walker - an obama appointee

U.S. District Court Judge Mark Walker ruled on Wednesday that former Florida Gov. Rick Scott had no right to suspend Broward County elections supervisor Brenda Snipes in November. Snipes had already announced her plans to retire on Jan. 4, before Gov. Scott effectively fired her.

Snipes was the face of the Broward County election controversy in November after her county became one of only two in the state that failed provide a ballot count in the Senate race between Scott and incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson (D) by the initial deadlines. They then missed a couple more deadlines after that. At one point Snipes was confronted by the press but she was unable to provide the number of outstanding ballots her office was still counting. This wasn't the first scandal for Snipes either. As Rep. Matt Gaetz (R) noted, Circuit Judge Raag Singhal ruled that Snipes had illegally destroyed ballots during Debbie Wasserman Schultz's primary race against challenger Tim Canova in 2016.

You can see why Scott and his fellow Florida Republicans were peeved over the head scratching delays and mismanagement. So, Scott retaliated with the suspension. Judge Walker, who it turns out has issued other rulings against the governor, accused Scott of overstepping his authority.

“Judges face murky legal issues every day," Walker wrote in his ruling. "Today is not one of those days. Flagrantly disregarding [Snipes’] constitutional rights fits into an unfortunate rhythm for Scott.”

Scott's office shot back at the “liberal judge" and stood by their decision.

“She failed to fulfill her duties, and for that she was suspended and should stay suspended,” Scott spokesman Chris Hartline said.

Now, incoming Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is required to issue a new order by the end of the month explaining the reasons for Snipes’ suspension, and demand that Snipes be granted a special hearing before the governor no later than March 31.

Judge Mark Walker (Democrat) appointed by Obama. No surprise here.

Hang on, gang.

Does anyone have a link to the 12 pages the judge supposedly wrote to explain himself?

I found two news articles that said (1) the judge refused to giver her the job back, since the resignation was 'unconditional', and (2) the current governor has to give specific reasons why she should have been suspended, and give her a chance to make an argument about the suspension before the governor by March 31. I don't have a PACER account myself (and gotta go to bed already), the website for the Northern District of Florida doesn't seem to have anything to offer up since mid-December of last year, and none of the media articles I found online offered up a link.

What I don't understand, and I live in Broward County. Is SHE RESIGNED. Once you quit a job, you can't go back and just get it back unless the employer grants it to you. SO, how does someone rescind a resignation after it was already submitted?

Maybe she crossed her fingers while handing it in?

This is why I do not feel sorry for federal workers out of work right now. In the real world, Snipes would have been fired years ago.
