WILSON COUNTY, N.C. — A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper was shot Monday evening in Wilson County and authorities were searching for the shooter, according to officials with two local law enforcement agencies.

Wilson County Sheriff Calvin Woodard Jr. told reporters at the scene that several law enforcement agencies, including from Nash, Edgecombe and Wilson counties, along with Rocky Mount police and the state Highway Patrol, were involved in the search for a suspect.


The trooper, whose identity was pending, was rushed for treatment to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, according to a tweet from the Pitt County sheriff. The trooper's condition was pending.

Sky 5 flew over the scene at about 6:15 p.m., where more than a dozen law enforcement vehicles were seen responding to an incident in the area. Around 7 p.m., law enforcement officers appeared to have stopped a tractor-trailer and a blue SUV near where the shooting occurred.

According to a tweet from the Pitt County sheriff, a suspect was on the run.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office took to Twitter to post about prayers being said for the trooper.

The trooper was shot in Wilson less than a week after a Raleigh police officer was wounded while on duty.

Just got a text said he was hit in the cheek and round exited the neck, he’s stable. I know him, but won’t ID until the news does.

Suspect is John Jones of Elm City NC, has a history of bad stuff.

I hope he's ok. That link keeps blocking me from reading the details.

Trooper's condition still not reported, but the suspect has been identified and a photo posted. The link worked for me.

Let's hope Mr. Jones makes a "furtive move" when they find him. Time to "Grady Judd" his ass.

Have retired LEO in my family. It seems the wounded trooper was not all that seriously wounded, for which I am grateful.

Hope they catch the dirtbag soon. Or better said, I hope they bring him in cased in a body bag.

Until these assholes get the message that it is not OK to shoot/injure/kill police officers, it will never get better. And, for the record my position is that when convicted they get one appeal and then comes the needle.

If I had my wish, shoot on sight!

UPDATE, they are saying Daniel will survive.

Unconfirmed, but one agency is saying that the suspect is in custody. And yeah, the guy is a dirtbag.

I know Daniel and he is a strong trooper. His granddaddy and his dad worked the same areas. I used to get coffee on my days off With him and his dad. Please say a prayer for him and his wife tonight.

We got the alert earlier that they caught him, bit by a K9.

It's been a shitty start to the new year for law enforcement.

Side note--the reporter in the OP article is my old deputy chief's daughter. It's good to see a reminder that there are some reporters out there that aren't vehemently anti-cop left wing nuts.
