The Ice Cream Man
posted
I am interviewing a manager for the first time. (I've always promoted from within, and this is a "store manager, ideally with the ability to become a subsidiary manager", so its a bit different.)

I'd like to ask the young man coming in, if he's carrying a pocket knife, as I think its absurd for a grown man to not carry one - but I realize many people have been conditioned to not have one.

I ALWAYS have a pen on me, but I think that's a lawyer thing.

(My brother is a contractor, and always has a measuring tape on him/in his truck, and thinks its absurd that I don.t)

I wouldn't. I almost never carry a pocket knife, but I have a 3" lock back in my shoulder bag, and a multi-tool and 10" Ontario camp knife in my truck.

I'm probably not carrying that bag to an interview, however, as it's pretty obvious that there are guns and extra magazines in it.

On the odd occasion where I wear a suit, or other "fancy" interview clothing, I carry a 938 in the pocket, and leave the heavy stuff behind.

I'm retired, so this is pretty much irrelevant, but I've ALWAYS carried a 3 blade pocket knife, usually an Uncle Henry and lately a Buck since I lost my last Uncle Henry.

99% of my working life was in maintenance of one sort or another and I'd use a knife multiple times a day. Still do, in fact.

I never did develop the habit of carrying a pen/pencil.

When I was working electronics and IT, I also carried a "pocket tweeker" a little screwdriver with a pocket clip on it, carried in my shirt pocket.

I am an accountant, but in my early career I relocated small factories & worked in the oil fields. I always have a small pocket knife & pen handy. When I go out, an Infidel is in my right rear pocket & a pen is in my left front pocket with my car key.

Same here on the pen in pocket.
But... the knife is usually in the vehicle.

"Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

15 years ago, while interviewing for an electrical engineering position, the manager over the position saw the clip on the edge of my pocket and asked about my knife. I'm not sure "are you carrying a knife?" is an appropriate interview question; but if they are presenting evidence, then you could ask.

Mine was (and still is) a Gerber Air Ranger. Big enough to be useful, very thin, and a sturdy clip on the side.

Don't look now, then, because I think you'll discover a lot of absurdity all around you.

Of all the men with whom I've been acquainted in my life, across a wide spectrum of professions and personal interests, I can think of only three others of which I was aware carried a pocket knife.

I always have a pen in my shirt pocket. I have in the past carried a small pocketknife (a gift from my Best Friend) but it and its replacements kept getting confiscated by the airlines, so I stopped. For years I carried a small compact 10-foot rule. My job didn't require it, but it was small and I found occasional uses for it. It has been lost for some time and the current replacements are bigger, so I don't have one now.

I carry two knives every day (even to the office)...a Kershaw Blur and a smaller S&W SWAT. I also carry a small flashlight. when I'm at the office there is also a pen in my shirt pocket. My wife thinks I'm a bit crazy but that is the way I was brought up.......

I think any person should carry a pen and a pocket knife. Those are gimmies. I carry a tiny “Rite in the Rain” capped pen that’s about 3 inches long, and an Emerson. Got multiple options for both, but both are the bare minimum to me.

Badge/gun for my job, but you’d be dumbfounded to know how few do when they are off.

Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here.

Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard.

I’ve carried a pocket knife of some variety since I was 12 (a long time ago), even if dressed in a suit & tie. Currently it’s a ZT 350. Often it’s in addition to a fixed blade (either one of sybo’s or a Walter Sorrels blade) if I’m going to a doctor’s appointment and can’t carry my pistol in the medical building.
