The Alaska Railroad -- Fairbanks to Anchorage and or Anchorage to Fairbanks in the middle 70"s.... Goes thru Denali National Park (Mt.Mckinley at 20,320ft tallest mountain in North America)... summers with oposite ends head towards each other and 1st arrival at pullover point waits for other train to clear then they continue their route... Back then you could purchase a ticket for a particular milepost marker to be let off train and be picked up at a later date and time that you schelude ......Winter schelude was only 1 train one way per day either north bound or south bound then opposite direction was the next day...Plus the food in the dinning car was not that bad. ................ drill sgt.

Decades ago I took the Starlight Express from Eugene Oregon to PDX then changed to the Columbia Gorge train thru LaGrande to Boise. Although I had driven a mostly parallel route zillions of times, everything was different & 'more scenic'.

I don't think they offer passenger tickets that route any more.
