I have one like this:

It will illuminate your next two steps, but it's not much for projection beyond that.

I have quite a few headlamps.
Best I have used is from Coast.
https://coastportland.com/products/xph30r

You don't have to cycle through the settings to turn it off, one push off.
It starts out on medium.
Battery life is incredible, a single charge will last for all day use and still have more.

For ease of use: Streamlight Bandit.
Its not a full on headlamp and wont replace one, but its easy to clip it onto a hat brim or keep in your pocket until its needed.

I've tried a number of different ones over the years and finally tossed them all and went with a real Fenix rechargeable headlamp. The clip-ons were always either not bright enough, or had dead batteries, or got lost somewhere. The Fenix, while larger, has multiple light levels for when you invariably need that. It'll go from just red lamps up to lighting up the neighborhood. Yeah bigger, yeah bulkier, but a much better option in my experience.

Just my $.02.

I have a Fenix E-Lite that I got as a gift. It's super light and works well (three brightness modes) for what I've used it for so far. Best for looking at stuff right in front of you, not great for looking long distance. I am not quite sure how long the battery lasts yet. If you always have a hat on your head I think it's a good choice, unless you are looking for a long throw/reach.

What's your budget? OLight has a few that might serve ranging from $20 to $70. Dual direction tail clips help.

long/slender:

I3T AAA
I5T AA
I5R AA with a rechargeable battery from olight but the T is NiMH compatible and the R requires the battery to be pulled to charge vis USB so what's the point???

Short/squat:

Both of these charge via a magnetic tailcap to USB cable. Very convenient.

S1R Baton II (I own this one)
Baton 3
