We used to get calls from the NC State Highway Patrol association looking for money. I told them to send a trooper buy and I’ll give him a twenty.

That usually ended with a, “we don’t do it that way”

The association keeps part of the money and then gives the troopers a portion. ...this is why I donate to the Shriners Hospitals, they put my brother in a hospital for four months and didn’t charge my mom n dad a dime.

Our unions do not solicit donations nor would they accept them. They are funded by dues paid by our members. Hang up on those aholes.

The easy response to any phone scammer is just hang up the phone. Click. Done.

I get calls from the New Hampshire Sheriffs Association, or the NH Chief's of Police Association...

oddly enough, always on my cell phone which has an NH area code

I never got any of those calls when I lived in NH...

I ask if they know how Chief So-and-So is doing now that he's retired....

I started a FOP Lodge #49, if memory serves correctly on the number, many years back with another officer and represented that lodge and county for a couple of years. FOP individual lodges do raise money in many ways with cold calls being one of them. If you ever feel like you want to contribute but worry about the validity you can ask for the company name and ask for the lodge number they represent them follow up with a call to the lodge to verify. It’s a lot of hassle and there are plenty of scams out there. Shriners and St Jude are hard to beat as far as charities go as MikeinNC mentioned. My daughters Girl Scout Troup raises money for them and I was one proud dad.

A while back I got a call from a guy saying that I had a outstanding warrant that I needed to send a prepaid card to him , gave me a name, address and phone number. I called the department that he said that he worked for and told them the story, they did not have anyone by that mpname working for them, said they would look into it.

The local police department is part of an association the solicits funds to help officers in need. I know this because I spoke with a local LEO before contributing. When any other LEO organization calls I simply tell them I support my local department and have a nice day.

I get far more calls for healthcare, lower interest rates, IRS violations, Windows going out of support and important things like that.

Let me help you out. Which way did you come in?

I have had several missed calls from the same number that called me yesterday. Now that I know what the calls are about, I first thought of blocking the number, but I decided not to.

Instead of blocking that number, I will answer calls with this greeting: "Metro police department, fraud unit. This call may be monitored or recorded for training or quality assurance purposes. Please state your name, your callback number, and the reason for your call."

We used to get those when we had a landline. As HayesGreener said, it is a scam because the police actually receive very little of the donations, even though they enlisted these people to call on their behalf. I always just told them my wife gave at the office, when she paid her FOP dues.

I get those calls a couple times a year. I just tell them that I don't send money over the phone and to send me a packet with info about their organization with a pre-paid envelope. Their answer is always the same. "We don't do it that way" and that's when I hang up.

Like 'MikeinNC', I give to Shriners and St. Jude hospitals. Awesome organizations.

Jim

Not that it'll stop them, but register all your phone numbers on the State and FTC Do Not Call lists. It may help...and if you get calls from them, you can file formal complaints against the Scammers...who've faced huge fines and been shut down for violating the Do Not Call laws on both the state and federal levels.
