My GPU seems to be running hot. I hear the fans cycling up and down periodically. I know I need to clean the dust/funk out of the case, but I just wonder how hot is too hot for this unit? 172 degrees F right now.

Thanks,

RMD

Every couple of years make sure there's still conducting grease (can't remember the exact term) between the chip and the cooling unit, that makes an important difference.

For the box, i use compressed air when available or a vacuum cleaner. Don't forget the PSU air intake slots and fan dirt collecting spots.

Have you checked for a BIOS update?

Fwiw, my son's gaming computer was running over 104 and it was too hot; causing shutdowns. Yours is way too hot.

a gamer buddy of mine showed me his solution about 15 years ago to the heavy demands his hobby imposed. I had never seen it,but there it was....an actual water-cooled monster chip of some kind. It had factory water jacket & inlet/outlet tubes. He was highly pleased at finding one.

I still crack up, don't know what happened after his install.

that's about 77c, you're good.

anywhere from 90+c or over 195F and you need to worry about it. but if the fans are ramping up and down you're GTG as they are controlled by the GPU.

further don't pull the cooler off the card, the TIM* is designed for the life of the card.

GPU? or CPU?
As for CPU's (yes they have the graphics built in) when they get too hot (around 90 C) they will start to throttle power and cause performance issues,
Had this with a client recently and installed after market Cooler Master Heatsink/Fan and the CPU speed DOUBLED in my benchmarks.

It appears people on this thread are confusing Fahrenheit and Celsius.

Under 85C is normal for a GPU, they will throttle at that point (depending on the model). That is easy to remember, as 85C is 185F.

104 Celsius is way too hot. 104 Fahrenheit is barely running. The OP is seeing 177 Fahrenheit.

Mine usually runs in the high 70s.
Blow out the dust in your case and make sure there’s adequate ventilation around it.

I looped a GPU benchmark today and couldn't get my large card past 84c (183c) But at idle, my card sits around 38c (100F).

When the motherboard on my last computer went toes up I decided that an upgrade was in order. End result is a Gen 8 I7 CPU with 32 Gig of Ram. to keep things cool I purchased a honking huge Cooler Master 8 tube CPU cooler. Just checked and my CPU is running at 29 C. Obviously I'm one who would highly recommend Cooler Master products.

BTW one unexpected benefit of using what is probably an oversized cooler is that the computer is dead silent. Yeah if I hold me ear against the case I can hear a slight whisper of the fans but at 2 feet cannot hear a thing unless the DVD drive is running. BTW, have two SSD drives in this computer so no hard disk noise.

I've stopped counting.

rduckwor,
might be a good idea to renew the Arctic Silver on your CPU - it does wear out - easy as and will probably help heat wise . Youtube is your friend for howto .
best .
