My son has a busy day taking the ACT and then sports training, and my wife is accompanying him. They had to leave early, so I got up at 5:15 and made a nice breakfast to send them on their way. They left a 6:30am, and I was in the kitchen washing the dishes I had just used. Standing at the sink, I overlook the living room, and to my right is a sliding glass door opening to our patio and the conservation area (swamp) behind us. All of the sudden, I hear a loud Bang! and the sound of shattering glass. Caught off guard, I had to orient myself quickly, but ran to get a conveniently located gun. Just then, my wife calls to remind me of something or other, I had to tell her to get off the phone so I could call 911, to report an attempted home entry, or vandalization of my window(s). Before I call 911, I checked out the slider just to be sure that it was what was broken. That is when I noticed the mess. We have a wine rack next to the sliders and my bride had bought a bottle of champagne for Valentine's Day. It had exploded! Glass and champagne everywhere, and no sign of a break in my outside windows or exterior wall. Not sure what happened, must have been a flaw in the glass, or it got knicked or micro-crack in transit. Glad I could see the slider when it happened so I knew someone wasn't immediately entering. Had it happened when I was asleep, my adrenaline level would have been a lot higher! So much for going back to sleep.

Days that begin like that there is no need for coffee as adrenaline leaves you wired

I did a similar thing the other day. Woke up to a loud bang like a door slamming in the middle of the night (at least for me lol. Turned out to be a rocket launch down at the Cape. I did a full perimeter search with my son because it woke him up as well.

Your pulse should return to normal in about a week.
Glad it was nothing serious though it is a heck of a mess.

Your wife's adrenaline probably spiked too when she heard you say "911".

It 'can' and does happen, though typically occurs at the winery while on the shelf aging. In fact, while visiting a Winery in upstate New York, info on this was part of the tasting/tour presentation.

Not Champagne related, but back in the '70s when carbonated soda was packaged in 64oz. glass bottles, my grandfather was rounding the end of an isle with a Pepsi display on the end cap, when such a bottle basically exploded in his face. Wrong place, wrong time...What are the odds! He was pelted with shrapnel when a 64oz bottle of Pepsi detonated, got glass in his eye(s), and a trip to the hospital as a result. Not 100% sure what we were drinking prior, but I do know we only drank RC Cola at my grandparent's house after that.
