Southwest Airlines to allow miniature horses as service animals in new policy
This brought a smile to my face. Imagine a horse prancing around the cabin, the absolute cluster fuck of the drink cart crashing into the horse or the horse jumping up into the lap of the three people sitting together.

This is awesome!! I almost want to rent one and be the first asshole in line with my "trained therapy horse". LMFAO.

So basically, we re trusting the same people who over prescribed narcotic medication and supported Obamacare to decide who needs an emotional support horse and who doesn’t.

I don't mind the dogs because I like dogs, but miniature horses? I didn't even know that was a thing, as service animals.

There is a debate about this in the service animal community. The vast majority of service animal are trained by their owners. There are obedience schools that offer training courses. There’s really no problem with this.
Then there are companies that train and sell service animals. The average price is $17,000. They would love training and licensing requirements and no doubt demand rules that are difficult for owner handlers to pass.
A true service dog is bombproof. I had breakfast Sunday and one person had a service dog. The dog was quite happy to relax under the table. When we got up to leave, people next to us asked where the dog came from.
The real problem are the managers of stores and restaurants. They are frightened to even ask “Is that a service animal” and “What is he trained to do?” I’ve yet to see someone ask a person and their fake service dog to leave. Even worse are the “emotional support animals.” They are never allowed into these stores and restaurants. Emotional support animals get protection for housing. That’s all.

And just imagine how much more expensive it could be once we got a nice fat bureaucracy set up to manage it all!

I guess if you own real estate it would be impossible to keep pets out.All the tenants have to do is say the animal is an emotional support animal. The ADA does not allow anyone to really verify the claim.

Whatever happened to commonsense, and a limited government?

But, yes - why can't a blind person have his ACTUAL service animal ride in the luggage compartment? And, if you won't go for that, how about the fact that dogs can be trained not to poop just anywhere, while miniature horses can not? How does a service animal help a diabetic?!

Ah - maybe you're right, maladat. Maybe we should have our airplanes be like the buses in third world countries with chickens, goats, and every other kind of livestock with the poop and the urine accessible to all!

There's not one exception, and what rule are you talking about? Service animals are allowed.

Put the service animal below? There's no valid reason.

How does a service animal help a diabetic? Were you not just told? Service animals on aircraft are allowed under federal law, but the airline can (and usually does) require documentation that the animal is required. The airline cannot ask the condition.

I wasn't told until after I asked the question. You need to go back and study the sequence of posts.

I have been a diabetic for 49 years - I have never needed a service animal.

If I ever do go blind, I will put my seeing-eye dog in cargo so that none of the other passengers will be inconvenienced in any way whatsoever. Why will I need him when I'm in the tube? A flight attendant will happily escort me to the rest room and back - I won't be walking anywhere else in the flying tube.

I found what you said riveting.

I just want to be able to take my emotional support P226 with me. Can I get a doctors note for that?

Y'all with your emotional support kitties can debate all day long, but the situation has been abused and you know it. There are damn few exceptions where a service animal is needed on a plane. Even the diabetic issue is over-rated, technology can easily do a constant blood sugar monitoring if needed, and diabetics that brittle are rare indeed. Personally, I'm sick of this shit. I had go defend in a deposition my decision to not hire an "emotionally disturbed" moron who demanded his pit bull escort him to work securing prisoners in a hospital.

Maybe the world doesn't revolve around you. Maybe others do need the animals. Maybe others find them useful. Perhaps the rest of the world doesn't need to do or behave or have exactly what you have or use it in the way you use it, which means that whether you use a service animal is really quite...irrelevant.

You do that. You go to the extra expense and trouble of of doing that while blind, too...after you check the dog and find your way to the gate on your own, and board on your own, then get off on your own, find your way back and claim your animal, and carry the cage on your own, while blind.

Good thinking. Or not.

Still irrelevant, however. If you turn blind and elect to forgo the service animal for a period of time, that has no impact on what others may choose to do, under the law. Both federal law and federal regulation recognize this right of others, as do each airline.

Having carried everything on board aircraft from goldfish to cows to exotic animals, race horses, and a killer whale...it doesn't bother me much that the animal is on board. Whether it bothers me, however, even though I'm the pilot is also...irrelevant.
