Baseball Player

First it was a doctor. Then a cop.

I still think I would have enjoyed a medical career.

First and foremost was a baseball player

But then injuries and reality set in during my senior of high school:

Psychiatrist
Serve in the Army
Police Officer

I got two of the three
I always struggled with math and then the advanced sciences needed. (In reality and to be honest I was lazy and did not want to get a tutor or put in the extra effort)

Fighter pilot.

Astronomer.
Doctor was never on the radar.

A Pilot. I'm saving up for my Pilot's license and training. I will hopefully do it next year. The one thing I told myself before I graduated, is I would do anything but sales. Guess who has 12 years of sales experience?

As a kid, I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up but I’m pretty certain it wasn’t this...

Former major league third baseman Graig Nettles, who played for the Yankees during the Steinbrenner era, famously said, “When I was a little boy I wanted to join the circus and be a baseball player. With the Yankees, I’ve accomplished both.”

That being said, I wanted to play hockey and be a police officer. In hockey, I instead ended up with a rewarding 33-year amateur officiating career that included five seasons in the minor pro leagues. And this is my 34th year in law enforcement, comprising both full-time and reserve service.

I’ve been blessed.

When I was 5, I had aspirations to be a garbage man. When I was 10, I set my sights a little higher and wanted to be an astronaut.

Basketball player.

In middle school, I wanted to be a photojournalist. That fascination lasted a number of years, I was in love with B&W photography. I couldn't afford the great gear, I used to go to Frank's Camera in the L.A. area on those rare Saturdays to just look at all of the equipment and hang out with the crowds. By the middle of high school, that dream disappeared.

Astronaut or Astronomer.

Stuntman. Also, the deadliest man in the world.

Neither worked out.

My parents took me on a tour of destroyer when I was 6, I was hooked. When I was 17 I signed up. 5 days after my 18th birthday I was in. Shortly after my 40th I was out.

I always wanted to drive 18 wheelers.

Milkman - I even got to go on a route with ours and cruising around with open doors.

My favorite older cousin walked a beat in Brooklyn. He was my hero. I really wanted to be a cop, just like him.

The closest I got was some Shore Patrol time in the Navy.

Later, around the mid 1970s, when I worked for a consulting company, I also spent a bunch of time with the Chicago PD, leading a team that was doing a requirements study for an communication system that would pull all of the separate systems that they had, into an integrated system. That gave me an interesting insight into the inner workings of a large city police department.

Early Teens: Rock 'n Roll Star - Didn't Work Out
Late Teens: Architect - Didn't Work Out
Later Teens: Became Nuclear Mechanic in the Navy - Did My Time
Career: 40+ years of Commercial Banking - Sorta Worked Out
Retired: Haven't decided yet after 5 years.

Kid: Cop or fighter pilot.


Reality: I spent 15 years writing weight loss and boob enhancement ads.

Good to be part of something that really makes a difference...
