Yeah. I made a Mint Julep and thought I'd sit and watch the Derby. Saw them talking about how that horse was added on Friday night due to a scratch. 80-1 odds. Was sipping my Julep from the silver cup and watched him come out of the pack and thinking "no way". Only horse with longer odds was in 1913.

Looked like he kicked in another gear. Watched a slow-mo replay and that horse was watching the lead (at the time) horse like it was prey. Almost looked pissed off to not be at the front of the pack.

I don't know much about horse racing.

Why were the lead horses so far from the rail ?

was the lead horse trying to fight off the horse to his immediate right ?

The jockey is very important in horse races. I hope there is no drugging involved. I have to give it to the jockey to guide the horse to the front of the pack.

We watched of course and my wife was paying lots of attention as they were brining the horses to post and as soon as my wife saw that horse she said with out a doubt that horse was going to win.
We all said not a chance in the world it is on the complete outside and is just a scratch fill.

Well she was right and yes that overhead view of the race is amazing.

Then after the race Rich Strike was biting the piss out of the escort horse. The dude on the escort horse punched Rich Strike pretty good a few times trying to get them untangled.

The crazy thing is the owner bought that horse last year for $30,000 bucks. The big name big owner horses are million bucks horses, if I am informed correctly.

The owner is local to me, and I've never heard of him before, and neither has anyone else I've talked to.

I guess that owner struck it rich then. Aptly named horse.

The jockey must have hit the “GO BABY GO” button on the pommel of the saddle!

The jockey was the key. He saw the horse and jockey in the yellow livery run out of gas and give up the rail. A burst of speed and he took over the rail putting him in a position to run down the leaders...and he did.

The announcer didn't even mention Rich Strike until he was about to win.

For six years, I covered the Derby (photo), stationed at the 1/4 pole.
Watch the lane that opened up just past that same 1/4 pole. It was miles wide.
Amazing to watch.

In the 1 minute YouTube clip, he is in 17th place with 1 minute to go!

At 30 seconds to go he hits VTech, nitrous and turbocharger! Amazing how he accelerates!
